Q: How can I get a copy of the Unabomber's manifesto?
J.N., Roanoke
A: These writings fill eight newspaper pages, published in The Washington Post on Sept. 19, 1995.
That separate section of the Post is on file at the reference desk in the Roanoke Public Library on Jefferson Street.
People can read it there or get a copy. Only a few have taken the time, though.
Reference librarian Dennis Pendleton said half a dozen people asked to see the manifesto when it was issued and none since, not even when Unabomber suspect Theodore Kaczynski was arrested early this month.
At 35,000 words, this treatise isn't quite the equal of Tolstoy's "War and Peace," but the FBI found it to be a revealing portrait of one character.|
Garcia put to rest
Q: I'm wondering about Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia. If I recall correctly, MTV reported at the time of his death that he was buried in San Francisco at an undisclosed location to avoid a lot of hoopla. Recently I read in the Roanoke Times Extra section that his widow and daughter scattered his ashes in a private ceremony. What is the deal?
I.M., Roanoke
A: Garcia's body was cremated a few days after his Aug. 8 death, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Aug. 19.
The information was attributed to Dead publicist Dennis McNally, who said Garcia had asked that his ashes be scattered from a boat off the coast of Marin County, Calif. He loved the water and scuba diving, McNally said.
On April 15, Garcia's request was honored by his widow and about a dozen relatives, friends and associates, who scattered most of the ashes beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, the Chronicle reported.
Early this month, widow Deborah Koons Garcia and guitarist Bob Weir scattered some of the ashes on the Ganges River in India.
Wider U.S. 460
Q: Will the Virginia Department of Transportation do anything about the 1.9 miles of two-lane bottleneck on U.S. 460 west of Salem?
N.N.
A: Planned development in Roanoke County's Valley TechPark at Glenvar is focusing new attention on this old road.
Roanoke County officials and the Kroger Co. were among the businesses and individuals who asked for improvements to U.S. 460 at the Transportation Department's annual hearing April 2.
The Commonwealth Transportation Board is weighing the U.S. 460 requests against all the other projects suggested for primary highways in the 12 counties of the Salem district.
The projects will be ranked by priority, and the available money will be divided among them in a tentative plan to be announced in about a month.
Another hearing at 9 a.m. June 6, possibly at the Salem Civic Center, will seek more comments from the public. A new six-year plan for state highway construction will be issued around July 1.
