RU NAMES NEW VICE PRESIDENT

The Radford University Board of Visitors put its stamp of approval on a new vice president for academic affairs Thursday, closing a four-month search for Charlie Owen's replacement.

Ann S. Ferren, currently a senior fellow at The American University in Washington, D.C., will begin work July 1 at an annual salary of $101,087.

Owens announced his retirement in October after five years in the school's chief academic post and one year as the university's interim president.

The university search committee narrowed the pool of about 120 applicants to four and chose Ferren as "the best fit for Radford University [who] would have a positive and immediate impact on the university."

Ferren graduated magna cum laude from Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Mass., and holds a master's degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a doctorate in education from Boston University.

She began work at American in 1975 as a faculty development consultant and served in five administrative posts while teaching as an associate professor for the last decade in the university's school of education. Previous to her year as senior fellow, Ferren served as interim provost for American from 1993-95.
