MARION - An annual family fun and community awareness day is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 1 at Hungry Mother State Park for the Smyth County Adult Literacy Enrichment program.
Educational and environmental groups will have exhibits on their activities. Organizations wishing to participate should call Judy Taminger or Deloise Hamilton at 783-7950 by May 22, or visit the SCALE office in the Smyth-Bland Regional Library at Marion.
Activities during the day will include a casting contest for kids, a carp-fishing contest for three age groups, environmental activities, story-telling and music. Admission is free.

May 18 in Copper Hill|
``SVSA for SPCA,'' a musical benefit presented by the Southwest Virginia Songwriters Association, will be held May 18 at 8 p.m. at the Bent Mountain Lodge at Copper Hill in Floyd County.
Recording artists Pole, Trafidlo & Phillips and Kim Person and Lana Puckett will perform, as well as other SVSA singer-songwriters, including Robert Craig, Deb Ferron, Mary Gordon Hall, Robert Johnson, Blue O'Connell and Hank and Pat Pfister.
The event is a smoke-free, alcohol-free benefit for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Admission is $10. Dinner is available 6 to 7 p.m. for an additional cost.
Donations of bagged or boxed pet food are welcome.
Reservations are required and space is limited.
