The second annual Relay for Life, a 24-hour fund-raising event for the American Cancer Society, will be at Virginia Tech May 17-18.
The theme for this year's event is "There is no finish line ... until we find a cure."
The relay will involve teams of eight to 12 members who will circle the university's South Recreation Field. Each participant has a goal of raising $100, and teams will try for $1,000.
Twenty local teams have signed up so far, and organizers are looking for more.
Last year's event raised $23,500. This year's goal is $30,000.
Corporations can be sponsors or donors and will be recognized in the relay's program. Corporate donations in 1995 ranged from $250 to $1,000. Donations also may come in the form of food, beverages or entertainment.
Participants will enjoy food, games, entertainment, music, clowns, line dancing and other events.
The relay starts at 6 p.m. May 17 with a "survivor lap" to be led by cancer survivors and their loved ones. A 9 p.m. candlelight ceremony will honor survivors and remember those who lost their battle to cancer. The relay will end at 6 p.m. May 18.
