EMORY - E. Ethelbert Miller, director of the African American Resource Center at Howard University, will give the commencement address May 18 at Emory & Henry College.
Miller is a visiting professor at Emory, a former Washington radio program host and frequent commentator on National Public Radio. He has published seven volumes of poetry and is editor of the African-American poetry anthology, "In Search of Color Everywhere."
He and Holston Area United Methodist Church Bishop Clay F. Lee will receive honorary doctorates from the college at the 10 a.m. commencement program.
One hundred seventy-five students are scheduled to graduate. Pam Fritz of Damascus and Chris Carlton of Clintwood will give the senior oration.
The William and Martha DeFriece Award given by the Board of Trustees for public service will go to A.L. Mitchell, a 1946 Emory graduate who has devoted his life to the education field. He worked in various positions at Emory from 1958 until his retirement in 1992.
