BLACKSBURG OFFICERS CONFRONT ARMED MAN

Town police arrested a Virginia Tech student early Thursday morning after the man allegedly pointed a 12-gauge shotgun at officers.

Jon Christopher Overton, 20, was arrested on two counts of brandishing a firearm and two counts of discharging a firearm in town.

Police gave this account of the incident: Officers responded to a fireworks violation on a walking trail connecting Pheasant Run Townhouses and University Village trailer park in the northeast portion of town. While on the trail, the officers heard what sounded like two shotgun blasts.

When the officers investigated, they saw a man coming around the corner of a Pheasant Run apartment. The officers spoke to the man who then turned and pointed a shotgun at the officers.

The officers, drew their guns and told the man to drop the gun, but he fled into a nearby residence.

No shots were fired during the incident.

Officers got a search warrant for the residence in the 400 block of Janie Lane. Once inside, police confiscated a 12-gauge shotgun and arrested Overton.
