Today opens the nominating season for candidates for Congress.
Besides the 9th District Republicans and Democrats, here's who else is nominating candidates:
* 5th District Democrats will gather today in Charlottesville to nominate state Sen. Virgil Goode, D-Rocky Mount, for the seat held by Rep. L.F. Payne, D-Nelson County. Payne is retiring.
* 5th District Republicans will meet May 18 in Forest. They have three candidates. Albemarle County lawyer George Landrith is viewed as the favorite over Mecklenburg County Del. Frank Ruff. Campbell County businessman Ron Buchanan is the third candidate.
* 6th District Democrats will meet today in Roanoke to nominate Rockbridge County communication technician and labor leader Jeff Grey to challenge Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Roanoke.
* 6th District Republicans will renominate Goodlatte May 18 in Bridgewater.
* Virginia Democrats will meet in Hampton June 7-8 to affirm Alexandria telecommunication entrepreneur Mark Warner as their nominee for U.S. Senate.
* Virginia Republicans will choose their Senate candidate in a June 11 primary. Former federal budget director Jim Miller is challenging three-term incumbent John Warner.
