The fact that the hottest-selling prom dress at Patina's in Roanoke is called,``Don't You Think I'm Sexy?'' ought to give you some clue that the Scarlett O'Hara look of 10 years ago has been replaced with the ``Am-I-really-going-to-let-my-daughter-go-out-in-public-wearing-that?'' style of today.
Sweet young things are spending an average of $250 for dresses they can never wear again unless they cross state lines. Moms could borrow the slinky numbers if they've been eating right, working out HARD and still have the chutzpah they had 20 years ago.
The shoes of the day (optional during the '60s) are like those Cinderella wore when she wasn't cleaning house ($75), ditto the opera-length white gloves ($30; a must this year). The gloves will probably be covering more of the upper body than the dress will. Add in the Jennifer Aniston (``Friends'') haircut ($25), cosmetics ($50), jewelry ($50) and the mandatory trip to Victoria's Secret ($50), and she's looking beautiful, though a lot more mature than you think she ought to, for a mere $530.
Oh, yeah, there's the boutonniere she buys for him - $5, if you splurge with roses.
What he spends on her: Dinner at The Library ($40; special menu for the enchanted evening), corsage ($10), $60 an hour for a limo (package deal: $300 for the evening) or $10 to put gas in Dad's car.
He can get away with a rented tux ($65, head to toe); after all, come Monday morning, who's going to talk about what he looked like?
