Pat Daly's sacrifice fly lifted Ferrum over Emory University 4-3 in the first round of the NCAA Division III South Regional baseball tournament on Friday at Methodist College in Fayetteville, N.C.

Daly's one-out sacrifice scored Chuck Jarrett in the bottom of the 11th inning.

The second-seeded Panthers (34-9-1) advanced in the winners' bracket to play top-seeded Methodist, an 8-7 winner over fourth-seeded Millsaps, in today's second round.

Third-seeded Emory (32-15) took a 3-0 lead after three innings. In the eighth inning, the Panthers' Jason Wilson walked and scored on a single by Riley Hodges. David Jones followed with a single and third baseman Brian Goodrich hit a two-run single to tie the score at 3-3.

Ferrum's Jimmy Hamilton (12-2) went the distance, striking out five, walking three and allowing three earned runs on nine hits. Hamilton was the Dixie Conference player of the year.

Emory's Roy Smetana (3-4) took the loss, giving up one earned run on one hit in three innings. He walked two and fanned one.
