The three large semiconductor plants to be built in the Richmond and Northern Virginia areas could bring new economic activity to other parts of the state, including the Roanoke area.
"If we start getting a large concentration [of the plants], there's got to be some byproduct that will work for us," said Phil Sparks, Roanoke's director of economic development.
As Virginia continues to build its reputation for manufacturing semiconductors, there will be spill-over in the state's major metro areas for suppliers, said Beth Doughty, executive director of the Roanoke Regional Economic Development Partnership.
Although the Roanoke region will benefit, the greatest impacts will be between Richmond and Northern Virginia, she said.
