Lawrence "Chalk" Whitlock's family last saw him Monday morning.
His wife didn't worry when he didn't show up Monday night because he'd been known to go off awhile from time to time, state Trooper Bill O'Dell said. His family figured Whitlock would return home when the notion hit him.
Sometime Monday night or Tuesday morning, the Endicott man apparently was killed in a car accident.
About 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, a road maintenance worker repairing a sign on a remote stretch of Virginia 785 in the Endicott community of Franklin County looked down an embankment and saw a car overturned, O'Dell said.
Whitlock, 68, had not been wearing a seat belt. He was thrown from the vehicle, which then landed on his upper body, according to O'Dell.
An autopsy is being conducted, but O'Dell said there is no foul play suspected.
