BATTERY RECYCLING TO PROTECT WATER

Batteries used in portable phones, power tools, and laptop computers can be dropped off for recycling at stores that sell those items, industry officials announced Tuesday.

The Portable Rechargeable Battery Association unveiled a $6million education and recycling campaign that it said was made possible by recently enacted federal legislation.

The measure requires uniform national labels to let consumers know the nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries can be recycled. The batteries are a source of water pollution when not separated from garbage.

The batteries will be recycled at a plant in Ellwood City, Pa., to recover the cadmium for reuse in batteries, and the nickel and iron to make stainless steel.
