A 54-year-old Wythe County man has been charged with murder in the shooting death of another Ivanhoe resident early Tuesday morning.
Ronald Lloyd "Buddy" Sutphin also may face federal prosecution as a career criminal, Wythe Sheriff Wayne Pike said.
Sutphin is charged with the murder of 31-year-old Tony Ray Dunford, who died at Wythe County Community Hospital about 6 a.m. Tuesday after being hit in the stomach by a shotgun blast five hours earlier at Sutphin's home in Ivanhoe.
Sutphin also is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and using a gun in the commission of a felony.
Pike said Sutphin served a sentence for a previous murder conviction from the early 1970s in Fries and had other criminal convictions over the past 25 years, qualifying him for prosecution as a career criminal.
That could add 15 years in prison to any sentences that might eventually be imposed on the other charges.
