Building Specialists Inc. of Roanoke has been awarded the contract to build the second part of the first phase of Market Station, a mixed-use development at Market Street and Church Avenue S.E. on the Roanoke City Market.
Peter Clapsaddle of DBA Architects PC is the architect for the project. The owner is Trompeter Brothers LC. Terms of the contract were not reported.
The historic building, which once housed a bakery and other retailers, is being restored to its original appearance. When completed, the building will contain more than 12,000 square feet of rental space on three floors for expected use as retail stores, offices and housing. |-Staff report
Coal output rises
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - U.S. coal production rose 3 percent in the week ended May 18, to 19.4 million tons from 18.9 million tons the week before, the U.S. Department of Energy said Tuesday. The industry produced 19 million tons in the same week last year.
Virginia mines produced 654,000 tons during the survey week, down from 664,000 tons the previous week and 664,000 tons the same week a year earlier.
Domestic coal production so far this year is 396 million tons, 1 percent behind last year's at this time. |-Associated Press

* Optical Cable Corp. of Roanoke said Tuesday it has a contract for sale of its indoor-outdoor fiber optic cable to Kobe Steel for installation at its plant at Lorain, Ohio. The deal is valued at $400,000 to $500,000.
* Mod-U-Kraf Homes Inc., Rocky Mount housing maker, said Monday it has introduced three new Cape Cod home designs. The company already had nine Cape Cod designs and more than 60 floor plans. The new plans are called the Maryland, the Virginia and the Carolina for three of the states in which Mod-U-Kraf does business.
* Electro-Tec Corp. of Blacksburg this week won a $144,015 contract from the Defense General Supply Center in Richmond for brush block assemblies.
* Bedford Bancshares Inc., holding company of Bedford Federal Savings Bank, said it plans to repurchase up to 118,016 shares of its stock, about 10 percent of its outstanding shares, subject to regulatory approval. The purchase would be made in open-market transactions subject to availability of stock. The shares would be used for corporate and other purposes, including the exercise of stock options. The company bought 18,500 shares last year and 61,893 shares so far this year.
