A letter from 1st Lt. Elizabeth Fair to an Army liaison that was forwarded to U.S. Sen. John Warner's office:
Dear Ms. Hanes:
I guess someone must have heard our children's prayers. We have all missed Pugsy very much since we left Fort Lewis, Washington.
My husband Randy and I have been married just over a year and are both in the Army. Between us we have three boys, Kevin, Cullen and Kory. Randy came to Germany with Cullen in January 1995. He left Pugsy with Kevin, Kory and myself in Fort Lewis. I received my orders to join Randy and Cullen in July of 1995. After much thought and consideration, we decided to leave Pugsy behind in Fort Lewis with a soldier I worked with. We thought it would be too much of an adjustment bringing our two families together and going to another country with a dog. We have regretted it ever since.
Every time our boys see a pug on TV or in a book they ask "Where is Pugsy, can't we get him back?" It was only a few weeks ago there was a special on pugs on TV. It was heartbreaking to hear our children ask about Pugsy and beg for him back. We had no way to contact the people we left him with.
Pugsy is about 7 years old. He was raised by Cullen's aunt and given to him when he was about 5 years old. This time Pugsy will stay with us for good! He is a loving family pet who is greatly missed.
This couldn't have happened at a better time. Today, May 17, is Cullen's birthday. This will be the best present he could ever receive.
We will never be able to fully express our gratitude to the wonderful people and community of Roanoke, Virginia for their loving care and concern for our Pugsy. We cannot wait until he is back and part of our family once again.
