CHILDREN REAP BENEFITS OF GRANTS

The Foundation for Roanoke Valley - referred to as the "community's savings account" - has awarded $16,740 in grants to 11 Roanoke Valley human service agencies and organizations to help meet children's needs.

The grants, all from the foundation's unrestricted endowment funds, include:

* $2,500 to help the YMCA of Roanoke Valley with its "Top Gun Summer Camp," a five-day-a-week program for children 5-13 who live in public housing.

* $2,500 to assist Greenvale School Inc. in providing tuition/scholarships for families who need help with child-care expenses.

* $2,500 to help the Child Health Investment Partnership (CHIP) with funding for a volunteer coordinator position.

* $2,000 to help Family Service of Roanoke Valley provide parent aide services to "at-risk" children and their families.

* $1,500 to help Total Action Against Poverty's Head Start program provide the basic foundation for a playground at a new Head Start facility.

* $1,500 to help the Roanoke Valley CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Foundation pay the salaries of staff to oversee a CASA for children under 6.

* $1,040 to help the Rescue Mission purchase bed rails and car seats for its Family Shelter.

* $1,000 to help the Summer Enrichment Program, a day camp for underprivileged children, with food and crafts.

* $1,000 to help Boy Scouts of America initiate a resident Cub Scout program in the Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority for boys in grades 1-5.

* $750 to help the Maternal and Infant Education Center provide toys, equipment, resource materials, smocks and a thermoscan thermometer for its nursery.

* $450 to help the Blue Ridge Zoological Society of Virginia provide outreach classes and a field trip to Mill Mountain Zoo for children in Head Start programs in Craig and Botetourt counties.

The foundation also awarded $10,300 in grants from its Melva P. Jones Fund for Music and Art; $500 in grants from its John A. Jamison Fund; $45,000 in grants from its Katherine Nelson Fishburn Foundation Fund, and $53,492 in grants to local, regional and national organizations from its nonendowed funds.

The foundation - created in 1988 - works to pool bequests, trust funds and other donations to support programs in social services, education and other areas. The foundation has permanent endowment assets of more than $4 million.

The foundation awarded $209,700 in grants in 1995 and expects to exceed that this year.
