Safety Council offers

driving courses

The Safety Council of Southwest Virginia will offer an eight-hour defensive driving course June 8 and 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The course is for anyone who needs five Department of Motor Vehicles merit points or has been ordered by the department to attend a driver-improvement course.

Salem holds track

meet Saturday

The city of Salem's Hershey Track Meet is scheduled for Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Salem High School track. Registration will be held on Friday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30-9:30 a.m.

Salem boys and girls ages 9 to 14 years old are eligible to participate.

Former Colonels say

goodbye to school

William Fleming Colonels from the graduating classes of 1933 to 1961 are invited to a Homecoming and Last Walk Celebration at their former high school, now Breckenridge Middle School June 9 from 2 to 5 p.m.

The building is scheduled to undergo major renovations.

Virginia School Census

is under way

Roanoke residents who recently received a Virginia School Census form are urged to send the requested information to the census office by following instructions mailed with the form.

The Commonwealth of Virginia will use the census to determine the distribution of the 1 percent state sales tax money and other monies to localities.

Residents who have questions about the forms may call 853-1608 for more information.

High school sports

physicals Saturday

The Lewis-Gale Foundation will conduct high school sports physicals for the 1996-97 season at Northside High School on Saturday.

The physicals are open to all area students entering eighth through 12th grade in the fall. Students must check with their coach or principal to find out the school's assigned time slot.

Participating athletes must bring a completed Virginia High School League consent form which may be obtained at all area high schools.

The exam fee is $10.

Star City tennis

tourney seeks players

The Roanoke City Department of Parks and Recreation will host the Star City Tennis Tournament June 21-23. Youths and adults may register in the singles and doubles divisions. The entry deadline is June 14 at 5 p.m. Call Roger Adams at 981-2236 for more information.
