The ROANOKE BRANCH OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN awarded its annual scholarship at the May meeting. This year's recipient is Anh Nguyen, a senior at Salem High School, who will attend Virginia Western Community College this fall.
The Roanoke branch also recognized its oldest member, Martha Bell. Bell, a longtime AAUW member and retired schoolteacher, turned 102 in February.
In its March meeting, the AAUW announced that Susan Kennedy, calculus teacher at the Roanoke Valley Governor's School for Science and Technology, is the Roanoke AAUW Teacher of the Year for 1995-1996. Kennedy was also named Virginia AAUW State Teacher of the Year for 1995-1996 at the state AAUW Convention in Richmond. Kennedy was recognized as a positive role model for the girls in her classroom, and for her encouragement of girls' achievement in math, science and technology.
DANNY RAYMER and AARON WALKER, students at Salem High School, won first place in the state finals of the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills National Quality Care Challenge, held May 11 in Richmond. Raymer and Walker will represent Virginia in the national finals on June 17 in Washington, D.C.
Contestants for the state finals were selected via a written examination on automotive service. The state finals matched two-person teams in a timed competition to diagnose and repair an intentionally "bugged" 1996 Ford Contour.
In addition to advancing to national competition, Raymer and Walker will receive full scholarships to Ford's ASSET (Automotive Service Education Training) program, which includes instruction in automotive service and a paid apprenticeship at a Ford or Lincoln-Mercury dealership.
