Artist plans summer workshops

BLACKSBURG - Blacksburg as "Taos of the East''?

That's what local artist Darcy Meeker has in mind with a series of art workshops to be held this summer at L'Arche bed and breakfast in Blacksburg. She wants eventually to expand the program to other area bed and breakfasts, and hopes to draw participants from throughout the region and maybe the country.

The New River Valley has lots of natural beauty, "a growing community of spiritual-minded people, and artists of national stature," Meeker said, just like Taos, N.M., a small town that has become a haven for artists and tourists.

She already has received a call from an interested person in Gaithersburg, Md., thanks to an announcement in a national arts publication, Meeker said.

Six workshops are scheduled this year. Each will be conducted by a local artist and last 4 days. The costs, between $75 and $150, include materials in some cases and lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday, but not a stay at the inn.

The schedule:

* June 10-13. "Watercolors in the Garden," Victoria Stone. $75.

* ``Small Weavings with Big Impact," Frieda Post. $95.

* ``Carving Stone: a Dance in the Light," Meeker. $95.

* ``Watercolor: Basics, Tricks and Techniques," Carole Davis. $75.

* ``Being Creative: Idea to Finished Artwork," Martha Dillard. $75.

* ``Painting and Sculpting with Handmade Paper," Katherine Pinkerton. $150.
