It's the meeting that's taken on a life of its own.
Four thousand fliers have been distributed inviting Catawba residents to a meeting Tuesday at Glenvar High School on a proposed citizen-initiated annexation with the city of Salem. Although the fliers say Salem officials have agreed to attend and answer questions, Mayor Jim Taliaferro said Wednesday that he and other city leaders were backing out.
But the meeting has not been canceled, because no one will take responsibility for calling it in the first place.
The meeting first was announced after a conference between members of the Coalition of Catawba Civic Leagues and annexation proponents Charles Landis and David Shelor. Shelor said he cannot cancel the meeting because it is being sponsored by the coalition. Coalition President Bob Crouse said the meeting was called by Landis and Shelor.
The coalition did formally invite Salem officials to the meeting, Crouse admitted, but he said that was done at Landis' instructions because "his invitation wouldn't be sufficient for the city to attend."
Although coalition Vice President Warren Brown Jr. has called a conference of the civic league group to meet in place of the information session with Salem, Crouse said Brown doesn't have the authority to do that.
Nevertheless, Crouse said he will be at Glenvar High School at 7 p.m. Tuesday, but if anyone else shows up, it's unclear who will be in charge.
