GIUDICE HR HELPS SALEM TOP FREDERICK

Center fielder John Giudice smacked a home run for the second time in as many nights as the Salem Avalanche defeated the Frederick Keys 5-2 to even their Carolina League series at 1-1.

Giudice went 2-for-4 with two RBI as Salem (32-29) took a 5-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Frederick scored one run in the bottom of the inning and another in the sixth to close to 5-2.

Jeff Sobkoviak (2-2) picked up the victory in relief of starter Doug Walls, who left the game in the second inning with a pulled muscle in his right shoulder. Sobkoviak gave up three hits and two earned runs and walked one in four innings. Pat McClinton pitched the final four innings to earn his first save.

Julio Moreno (5-4) took the loss for Frederick (29-33). He gave up six hits and five runs - four earned - and walked one.

Third baseman Steven Bernhardt went 2-for-4 and drove in a run for Salem, and Pookie Jones had an RBI double.

Avalanche pitcher Mike Vavrek (5-2, 3.79 ERA) will take on Frederick's Dave Bigham (1-2, 6.75) when the teams meet again tonight.
