ALLEN, Ethel Carlene Grant, 74, of Raphine, died Sunday, June 9, 1996 in the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville. Born on July 29, 1921 in Rockbridge County, the daughter of the late William Emmett and Ethel Nannie Grant. On April 4, 1936, she married Jacob Edward Allen who died June 19,1989. She was also predeceased by a sister, Ruth G. Campbell and a brother, Alvin Grant. She is survived by five children, Pauline Bryant and husband David, Lewis Allen and wife, Nancy, all of Buena Vista, Wilmer Allen and wife, Joyce, of Vesiuvius, Kennan Allen and wife, Gloria Jean, Franklin Allen and wife, Wanda, all of Raphine; nine grandchildren, Sheila A. Brown, Staunton; Melinda A. Brown, Lorrie K. Allen, Amanda A. Allen, Anthony L. Allen, Penny A. Moore and Priscilla A. Groah, all of Raphine, Billy Allen and Sandra M. Bryant, both of Buena Vista; six great-grandchildren, Shannon Lineberry, Vesiuvius, Clarissa Brown, Ashley Brown, and Taylor Brown, all of Staunton, Jacob Moore and Brandon Brown, both of Raphine; two sisters, Delma G. Cash, Fairfield and Elizabeth G. Hardy, Buena Vista; two brothers, Joseph Grant and Selvey Grant, both of Buena Vista. The funeral service will be Tuesday, June 11, 1996 at 2:00 p.m. from the Irish Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Tom Cochran and Rev. William Strickler officiating, Burial will be in Mt. AYERS, Janie Katherine, 60, of Bedford, passed away Sunday, June 9, 1996, at her residence. She was born June 16, 1935, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Herman Lukin and Erma Rorer Lukin. She was a member of Quaker Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, H. Elmo Ayers. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, June 11, 1996, at 2 p.m., from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Huddleston, by the Rev. Wayne Murphy. Interment will follow in the Ayers family cemetery. BOYD, Robert P., 84, of Floyd, passed away Saturday, June 8, 1996, at Radford Community Hospital. He was a retired Army veteran and a member of Covington Masonic Lodge #171, A.F.&A.M. He is survived by his wife, Maxine A. Boyd of Floyd; several nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Lafone Moles of Floyd. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Jacksonville Cemetery, with Mr. Mitchell Floyd and Floyd Masonic Lodge #329 A.F.&A.M. officiating. CLINGENPEEL, J. Earl, 87, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, June 9, 1996, at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Virginia B. Clingenp eel. He was a member and Deacon Emeritus at Mayflower Hills Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Eleanor and Julius Shepheard, and Connie and David Hutchens of Roanoke; a son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Regina Clingenpeel of Roanoke; five grandchildren, Mark Shepheard, Dwight Shepheard, Sonya Ensor, Greg Hutchens and Kevin Hutchens of Roanoke; three great-granddaughters; a brother, O .F. Clingenpeel of Roanoke, and a sister, Elizabeth Parcell of Roanoke. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, 1996, with the Rev. Donald R. COFFMAN, Mamie Elizabeth Jefferson, 64, of Salem, passed away Friday, June 7, 1996, while vacationing in Myrtle Beach, S.C. She was predeceased by a sister, Shelby Jean Rakes. She was a devoted member and Sunday school teacher at Central United Methodist Church in Salem for many years. She is survived by her husband, Clarence M. Coffman; one son, Steven M. Coffman of the home; one brother, Thomas Jefferson of Penhook, and a special friend, Janie Bower. CRAIGHEAD, Alma Gay, 86, of Roanoke passed away Saturday, June 8, 1996. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law and sister. She was well-known for her hospitality. Mrs. Craighead was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry L. Craighead and a son, Delbert L. Craighead. She is survived by a brother Ira (Pete) Hall; a daughter-in -law, Earlene Craighead Reynolds; grandsons, Michael D. and wife Christy Craighead, Stephen L. GARMAN, Dorothy Custer, 87, of Catawba, died Saturday, June 8, 1996, at Lewis-Gale Hospital. She was a faithful employee of Cat awba Mercantile, retiring after more than 25 years of service, and was a member of Catawba United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude M. Garman. Mrs. Garman is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William R. and Roberta Garman of Forestville, Md., and James S. and Judy Garman of Catawba; one brother, Gerald K. HACKWORTH, Jacqueline Burnette, 69, of Huddleston, passed away Saturday, June 8, 1996, in Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born May 21, 1927, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Lloyd E. Burnette Sr. and Elizabeth Witt Burnette. She was a past employee of Burlington Mills and Belding Corticelli, and was a member of the Bedford YMCA, Bedford Senior Citizens and Huddleston United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence T. Hackworth of Franklin Manor Nursing Home in Rocky Mount; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lloyd E. INGRAM, Loretta Elizabeth, 58, of Roanoke, departed this life Wednesday, June 5, 1996, at the Lakeview Retirement Center in Roanoke. She was born April 8, 1938, in Radford, the daughter of the late James Luther Ingram and Mary Haley Ingram. She was a graduate of Radford University, and was a former employee of the Roanoke City School System. She was a teacher in the system for many years. Loretta was a member of the Mt. Olive Gospel Tabernacle Church. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Ingram. She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Mrs. Marisa Jay Patterson (Quiton); five brothers, MacArther (Pam) Ingram, James (Drucilla) Ingram, Fred (Yvonne) Ingram, Charles (Mary) Ingram, and Thomas Ingram, all of Roanoke; one grandson, Taylor Redmond; goddaughter, Tammy Shepherd, and one sister-in-law, Dorothy Ingram. LIPSCOMB, Bruce Alexander, 79, of Brownsburg, Va. died Saturday, June 8, 1996 at his home. Mr. Lipscomb was born February 21, 1917 in Low Moor, Virginia. A son of the late George Wiley Lipsocmb and Bruce Douglas Alexander Lipscomb. He was a member of the Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church and served as a elder. Mr. Lipscomb was a graduate of VPI & SU, in Agricultural Engineering Class of 1939. He was a veteran of World War II serving the Pacific Theater in the 861st AAA Automatic Weapons Batallion in the invasions of Saipan and Okinawa. Mr. Lipscomb established the Timber Ridge Farm, Inc. in 1977 and retired as a dairy farmer. He was also a member of the Fairfield Ruritan Club and served on the Elector Board for the Rockbridge County School Board. Surviving are his wife, Marry Sterrett Lipscomb, Brownsburg, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce Alexander Jr. and Mary Lynn Lipscomb, Joseph Sterrett and Julia Lipscomb, all of Fairfield,Va.; four grandchildren, Bruce Alexander Lipscomb, III, Roanoke, Va., Robert Madison Lipscomb, Joseph William Lipscomb, Elizabeth Julia Lipscomb, all of Fairfield, Va.; special cousins, James Gibson Alexander, Robert Tate Alexander, both of Fairfield, Va., John Addison Alexander, Winston-Salem, N.C. SAUL, Bobby Lee, 65, of Roanoke, died Friday, June 7, 1996. Born in Roanoke, he was the son of the late DeMoss H. and Ada Flora Saul. He retired from Appalachian Power Company after 41 years of service. He was a lifetime member of Central Church of the Brethren, where he served as a board member. He was a lifetime member of the Roanoke Bowling Association for the past 35 years, and was responsible for directing and organizing the Bowling Green League at Hilltop Lanes. He also will be remembered as a volunteer with the Sandlot programs in the Williamson Road area. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Dorothy Cornett Saul of Roanoke; children and their spouses, Jeffrey Alan Saul of Tampa, Fla., Nancy Saul and Brian J. SHEPHERD, Joyce Johnson, 68, of Glasgow, died Sunday, June 9, 1996, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Mrs. Shepherd was born January 14, 1928, in Rockbridge County, a daughter of Ada Creasy Johnson of Glasgow and the late Charles Glenn Johnson. She was the widow of Elgin Ambrose Shepherd. She was a member of Glasgow Presbyterian Church, where she served as Sunday school superintendent for many years. She also was a member of Rockbridge Woman's Club and the local AARP chapter. In addition to her mother, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, E. G. and Betsy Shepherd of Natural Bridge Station; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles G. and Virginia Johnson of Roanoke and Sam M. and Betty Johnson of Buena Vista; a sister and brother-in-law, Jean B. and George Atkins of Glasgow; four grandchildren, Katie, Matthew, Will and Ann Shepherd, and several special nieces and nephews.
