AUSTIN, William Eugene (""Billy"") Jr., 75 of Roanoke, died Tuesday, June 11, 1996. Mr. Austin was an army veteran. Surviving are three sisters, Mary A. Hall, Bedford County, Mrs. Bill (Minnie M.) Ball, Bedford, Jean Kesler, Salem; one half brother, Harry Austin, Floyd; two half sisters, Arlene Spradlin, Roanoke, Gloria DeBoard, Troutville; numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, June 13, 1996 at Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call Lotz Roanoke Chapel, 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

AUSTIN, William Eugene, Jr., (``Billy""), 75, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, June 11, 1996. He was a U. S. Army veteran. Surviving are three sisters, Mary A. Hall, Bedford County, Mrs. Bill (Minnie) M. Ball, Bedford, Jean Kesler, Salem; half brother, Harry Austin, Floyd; two half sisters, Arlene Spradlin, Roanoke, Gloria DeBoard, Troutville; numerous nieces and nephews; two special friends, Lela and Pat. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Fair View Cemetery. Friends may call at Lotz Roanoke Chapel from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

BAXTER, Robert Francis, M.D., Ph.D., 69, of Grundy, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 1996. Born in New York City, he was a son of the late Frank and Frances Anna Felton Baxter. He had been a resident of Buchanan County for 38 years and was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. He received his B.S. degree from Roanoke College in 1951, did his post-graduate work in biochemistry at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1952-53, and received his M.D. degree from the University of Virginia in 1957. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, and was a former employee of Dominion Colonial and Overseas Exchange, Barclay Bank. He was a member and current President of the Buchanan-Dickenson County Medical Society. He was Chief of Staff at Buchanan General Hospital from 1993 to the present. He was active in numerous other medical, business and civic organizations. Dr. Baxter was inducted into the Buchanan County Hall of Fame in 1989, and received other awards. He published several medical works. He was a Church of God minister from 1977 to the present, served as chaplain for Grundy H ospital, and was a member of the Ford Philpot Evangelistic Association. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nancy Carolyn McFall Baxter of Grundy; four daughters, Mrs. Rayburn (Frances Lee) Minton, Mary Patricia Baxter Cole and Mrs. Rick (Elizabeth Ann) Wright of Grundy, and Mrs. William (Nancy Jo) Testerman of Kingsport, Tenn.; one brother, Thomas C. Baxter of Staten Island, N.Y., and five grandchildren, Aimee Baxter Cole, Robert Rayburn Minton, Aaron Robert Wright, Jo Beth Baxter Wright and Emily Carolyn Testerman. He was preceded in death by one son, Robert F. Baxter Jr. Funeral services for Dr. Robert Francis Baxter will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, June 14, 1996, at Buchanan First Presbyterian Church in Grundy, with Father Dan Bain, Father Tom Collins, Dr. Murphy D. Miller, the Rev. Orvin Thakkar and Evangelist Clarence Greenleaf officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, with full military rites conducted at the graveside by members of John Ratliff Post #164 of the American Legion and Childs Gentry Post #7360 of Veterans of Foreign Wars. The body will be taken to the church at 5 p.m. Wednesday, where friends may call. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of contributions to the Baxter Foundation, c/o Miners and Merchants Bank, P. O. Box 1010, Grundy, Va. 24614. BLEVINS, Robert Thomas , 4, of Roanoke passed away Monday, June 10, 1996. Surviving are his parents, Tracy L. and Carla H. Blevins; two sisters, Heather and Angelica Blevins; grandparents, Thomas and Frances Blevins, Vinton, Emma Jean Lucas, Greensboro, N.C.; six uncles; and seven aunts; also a number of cousins. BURDETTE, Ruby Marion, 76, of Route 4, Moneta, died Sunday morning, June 9, 1996, in the Bedford Memorial Hospital. Born July 21, 1919, in Bedford County, she was a daughter of the late John and Susie Leftwich Burdette. She was a homemaker and a member o f the Universal Outreach Church of God in Bedford. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Reggie Burdette and Lafeyette Burdette; and two sisters, Odessa Minnis and Gertrude Bradley. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Edna English of Roanoke and Mrs. Laura Witcher of Washington, D.C.; one stepsister, Mrs. Frances Brown of Altavista; a devoted niece, Kimberly Taylor of Moneta; and a number of other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Universal Outreach Church of God in Bedford by the Bishop Edward M. Crews, with burial in the Thomas Chapel Church Cemetery. COFFEY, Roy M., 78, of Roanoke County, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 1996, at Woodhaven Nursing Home. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the recipient of the Purple Heart. Mr. Coffey was a retired vice president and general sales manager of Advance Auto Parts. He was a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Christine G. Coffey, Roanoke County; son, Byron Roy Coffey, Roanoke County; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Ramsey, Mrs. Hilda McGann, and Mrs. Betty Jean Winter; three brothers, Mr. Marshall Coffey, Rev. Rufus Coffey, and Mr. Glenn Coffey. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel, 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Arthur E. Grant officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. DAUGHERTY, Virginia Mills, 95, of Roanoke, died Monday, June 10, 1996. She was formerly of Bluefield, WVa. She is a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church. She is the widow of John Carlisle Daugherty and is survived by a sister, Evelyn Mason of Glasgow; also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews including Larry Mason of Glasgow, Garland Mason of Roanoke, Robert Mason of Annandale, and Donald Mason of Claymont, Del. Good friends, Mabel and Bucky Elmore, and Angela and Mike Collins and family of Roanoke. DRAKE, Denise Van Lear, a native of Virginia, died at a hospital near her Lanconia, N.H., home Thursday, May 30, 1996. She was 49. Mrs. Drake, the daughter of Mrs. Sydney Van Lear-Upshaw of Alexandria, Va., and the late Major Murray M. Van Lear, USMC Reserve, was born in Charlottesville, Va. She attended Roanoke College in Salem, Va., and was graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. A jour nalist, she worked for Western Publishing Company, Town & Country Magazine and several other publishing houses in New York City. Upon marriage to Paul Drake of Lanconia, she worked for several other firms. At the time of her death, she was a legislative assistant at the New Hampshire State House. A memorial service is being arranged in the Lake Country Region, New Hampshire

FLINCHUM, Michael Wayne, 40, of Titusville, Fla., died Thursday, June 6, 1996. He was a former resident of Salem. He graduated from Glenvar High School in 1974, and graduated from Virginia Tech in 1978. He earned his engineering degree from George Mason University in 1986 and moved to South Florida, where he worked as an engineer for Lockheed -Martin at the Kennedy Space Center. He was a member of the Indian River Methodist Church and a Brother of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He was preceded in death by his father, Clinton C. Flinchum; and brother, C. J. Flinchum. Survivors include his wife, Carol Lynn Flinchum; daughter, Shannon Flinchum, both of Titusville, Fla.; mother, Elizabeth Flinchum, Salem; brothers, Leon Flinchum, Chicago, Ill., Noel Flinchum, Salem; sister, Mozelle F. GOODSIGHT, John Adams Wolfe, 66, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 1996. He was born in Washington, D.C., and lived in Northern Virginia where he was a self-employed sheet metal distributor. He also was a maintenance technician with the Loudoun County Public Library System, and in 1988 received a merit award for being an outstanding employee. He was a member of the Lions Club in Northern Virginia, and served as a bulletin editor and tail twister from 1961 until 1984. In 1989, Mr. Goodsight moved to Roanoke and was active in volunteer work at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife, Ola Gaylor Goodsight of Roanoke; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Evelyn G. and Morton Seward of Alexandria, and Alice G. and Walter Boltrick of Dearborn, Mich.; a brother and sister-in-law, William L. and Laura Goodsight of Gettysburg, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Elva L. Brown and husband Walter of Sacshe, Texas, and several nieces and nephews. McAVOY, James Galen, 87, of Boones Mill, died at Friendship Manor Tuesday, June 11, 1996. He was born in Fayetteville, W. Va. on March 5, 1909 to the late James and Mary Alice Sanger McAvoy. He attended Manchester College, North Manchester, Indiana, served in the U. S. Navy and was retired from the U. S. Postal Service. He was a life-long member of the Church of the Brethren - first at Pleasant View, Fayetteville, W. Va. and since 1972, Bethlehem at Boones Mill. He was active in all areas of the church, but was especially known as a teacher of Sunday School and Bible Study groups for over 65 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Vivian Hitchcock McAvoy and five sisters. He is survived by his wife, Effie Radford Conner McAvoy of Roanoke; a son and daughter-in-law, Rev. James O. and Nancy McAvoy of Live Oak, California; grandsons and wives, James and Karen McAvoy, Tuscon, Arizona, John and Donna McAvoy, Live Oak, California; three great-grandsons, Jeffrey, Gregory, Jeremy McAvoy, Live Oak, California; three stepsons and wives, William B. and Sally Conner, Kennett Square, Penn., Glenn H. and Lynn Conner, Suffolk, Roy C., Jr. and Vickie Conner, Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. McCOY, Mayme Katherine, 70, of 108 5th st., Pulaski, died Tuesday, June 1, 1996, at her home. Born March 8, 1926 in McCoy, Va., she was the daughter of the late Irvin A. McCoy and Margie Dillon McCoy. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Josephine McCoy. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, William E. McCoy and Blanche McCoy, Huntington, W.Va. Ms. McCoy taught school in Pulaski County for eighteen years, retiring due to disability. She was active in civic affairs, was vice president of Pulaski County Womans Democratic Association, a diligent worker in national, state and local elections, and also for charities. She was a charter member of New River Valley Historical Society, member of the National., State and County Retired Teachers Association, guidance counselor and Senior Class Sponsor for many years at Pulaski High School., co-founder of Washington, D.C. Toures for Seniors, co-founder and director of Youth Government Day in which Seniors were trained, elected, and appointed to hold town and county offices. She was popular in social affairs, and also a pianist for weddings and parties. She was the recipient of the 1964 teachers medal from the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge, citing her for her excellence as a teacher of God, country, good citizenship and the fundamental beliefs of our U. S. Constitution and our democratic way of life. She received statewide acclaim for this highly organized activity. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 8 p.m. from Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home, with Dr. Norman E. Witthuhn officiating. Burial will follow Friday at 11 a.m. in Centennial Christian Church Cemetery, McCoy, Va. MORRILL, Diane Marie, 55, of Blacksburg, died Monday, June 10, 1996, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She leaves her husband of 36 years, Robert; daughters, Lee Ann Slack of Worcester, Mass. and Mary Beth Morrill of Richmond; sons, John and Jeff of Arlington; and grandchildren, Thomas and Jaclyn Slack. Diane planted perennials in the lives of many. They will bloom forever. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 1996, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Blacksburg. MULLER, Dr. Edward Joseph, 83, of Sarasota, Fl., died Sunday, June 9, 1996 at his residence after a brief illness. He was born in Jersey City, N.J. on September 29, 1912, the second son of Andrew J. and Nellie Smith Muller. During World War II he served in the Pacific Theatre in the U.S. Navy and also served in the Korean War. Dr. Muller was a graduate of the University of Maryland Medical School and the Rochester School in N.Y. Prior to World War II he had a private dental practice in New York. After coming out of the military service he worked with the Veterans Administration Regional Office in Los Angeles and retired in 1968 from the Veterans Administration Office in Roseburg, Oregon. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Donahue Muller; a brother, Andrew J. Muller, N.J.; two sisters, Gloria Rauscher, Ohio, Rosalie Gardner, N.J.; twelve nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held in Evergreen Burial Park, Thursday, June 13, 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Thomas P. O'Dell officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at Oakey's South Chapel.

SLUSSER, James Hamilton, Sr., 73, of Mechanicsville, died Sunday, June 2, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Zula Miller Slusser; daughter, M. Catherine Slusser, Richmond; son and daughter-in-law, James H. Slusser, Jr. and Evelyn D. Slusser, Virginia Beach; brother, Walter O. Slusser, St. Clair Shores, Michigan; and brother, Paul W. Slusser, Shreveport, Louisiana. Mr. Slusser grew up in Staunton, Va., son of the late Walter and Ida May Slusser. He was a public school teacher at Hurricane High School in Hurricane, W. Va. for seventeen years and a principle at Mechanicsville Elementary School, Mechanicsville, for sixteen years, where he retired in 1983. He was a veteran of World War II, United States Navy and a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Staunton. Remains rests at Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. WALKER, C. Alvin, (``Al""), 79, of Glasgow, died Monday, June 10, 1996, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Mr. Walker was born May 7, 1917, in Botetourt County, a son of the late Nathan Walker and Ida Belle Rickman Walker. He was a member of Glasgow Baptist Church and the Glasgow-Natural Bridge Mens Prayer Breakfast Group. In 1952, he joined the Glasgow First Aid Crew and was a life member. He also was a member of the Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Walker retired from Burlington Industries after 32 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Betty Sloan Walker of Glasgow; a daughter, Esther W. Utkewicz of Bloomfield, N.J.; two sons and daughters-in-law, CWO4 (Ret.) Boyd A. and Linda Walker of Gloucester, and Rodger D. and Karen Walker of Scottsville; two brothers, Lloyd Walker of Natural Bridge Station and Ellis Walker of Buchanan; a sister, Mary Grant of Salem; nine grandchildren, Jennifer Cianci, Dr. Mark Utkewicz, Duane Utkewicz, Stephanie Airey, Damian Utkewicz, SSG Robert Walker, James Utkewicz, Wendy Clement and Wesley Walker, and nine great-grandchildren. WEBB, Henry Edward, 70, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, June 9, 1996, at the VA Medical Center in Salem. He was the widower of Elsie Mae Hancock. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. Mr. Webb was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Harvey Webb, Thomas Calvin Webb, and Franklin D. Webb. Survivors include one daughter, Janice Webb Vineyard, Roanoke; seven sons, Henry C. Richard Webb, Retired, Roanoke; two brothers-in-law, William Hancock and Fred Hancock, Rocky Mount; three sisters-in-law, Mildred Webb, Reva Hancock, and Berlie Hancock; 22 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Thursday, 11 a.m., at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. Elder Edwards will officiate, with the interment in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hamlar-Curtis.
