Jim Kitts, a former Ferrum College linebacker, has signed a free-agent contract with the NFL's Washington Redskins. Kitts played last season with the Albany Firebirds of the Arena League as a fullback/linebacker and led the team in rushing.
Kitts, a Chesapeake native, will play linebacker for the Redskins. He is the 43rd former Ferrum player to sign an NFL contract. Kitts played for the Panthers from 1990-93, recording 188 total tackles, eight interceptions and five sacks.
The 6-foot-2, 243-pounder ranks fifth in career solo tackles (90) and fourth in career interceptions at Ferrum. He graduated in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in social work.
The Redskins also announced the signing of punter Lawrence Calicchio, who averaged 40.1 yards on 49 punts for Mississippi last season.
