Parents of a 10-year-old boy used CPR to revive him Thursday night after they found him hanging by a rope from a tree in their yard, state police said.
The boy, whose name was not released, was listed in stable condition in the intensive care unit of Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital on Friday, according to state Trooper J.D. Roark.
Roark said his investigation showed the boy was playing when he fell or jumped and got tangled in the rope.
"He tied the rope to a branch and then climbed a fence column that was about 5 feet tall," Roark said.
The parents, who live in the southeastern area of the county, cut the rope holding their son and found he was not breathing and had no pulse, Roark said. They immediately performed CPR and were able to revive their child.
"I'm sure [the CPR] made all the difference in the world, because it took us about 15 minutes to get there," Roark said.
Roark said he did not know how long the boy had been hanging in the tree, but said it could not have been more than a few minutes. Any longer than that, Roark said, and the boy could not have been revived.
Brad Nester, Pulaski County Rescue Squad captain, said an emergency call came in a little after 8 p.m. saying a boy was hanging from a tree. "He was laying on the ground when we got there," Nester said.
Rescue workers took the boy to Carilion Radford Community Hospital, and from there he was flown to Roanoke by helicopter, Nester said.
