* Have frequent performance checks. An employee who is getting off track has a chance to improve, and the manager can offer assistance before the employee derails.
* Get feedback. Ask your manager/employee what went well and what could have gone better.
* Communicate goals. Tie in the company's business objectives to the department's and the individual's goals. Once an employee understands how his or her job supports the manager, he or she can focus on what's really important - the end result.
* Disconnect money from development issues. To ensure that employees' focus is on feedback rather than on pay increases, hold performance evaluations several months from salary decisions.
* Be accurate. Nobody wants to give negative news, but inaccurate evaluations of poor performers can end up in court if the employee later brings a wrongful termination lawsuit.
