Tal Light hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Kyle Houser sustained the offensive punch Tuesday as the Salem Avalanche knocked out a 7-4 victory over the Winston-Salem Warthogs. (Box score in Baseball Scoreboard.)
It was the first Carolina League home run for Light, who joined Salem from Asheville, N.C., two weeks ago. Houser helped keep things going with a 4-for-4 effort.
Starting pitcher Doug Million gave three runs back to the Warthogs in the first, but settled down, allowing no more runs to push his record to 7-4.
The game remained tied at 3-3 until the fifth inning. Houser reached on a single and John Giudice drove him home with a single on the next pitch. Nate Holdren and Light later got on to load the bases. Chad Gambill had a sacrifice grounder to score Giudice and the fifth run, and Pookie Jones walked, sending Holdren home from third.
In the seventh, Salem finished its scoring when Jones hit an RBI single to score Blake Barthol.
Salem improved to 6-6 in the second half of the season, while the Warthogs fell to 5-7. The teams meet tonight at 7:15 for the third game in the four-game series.
