Yes, indeed!
Salem's Will Scalzitti and Pookie Jones hit back-to-back homers in the top of the ninth inning as the Avalanche came from behind to knock off the Winston-Salem Warthogs 4-2 in a Carolina League game Wednesday night. (Box score in Baseball Scoreboard)
Trailing 2-1, Chad Gambill started the rally for the Avalanche (7-6) with a one-out single off Winston-Salem starter Clay Caruthers. Scalzitti followed with a two-run blast over the left-field wall to give Salem a 3-2 lead. The homer was Scalzitti's sixth of the season - five versus the Warthogs.
Winston-Salem (5-8) then brought in closer Brad Tweedlie, one of the Carolina League's top relievers. But Tweedlie gave up an opposite-field solo homer to Jones that provided insurance for Salem.
Caruthers (5-6) took the loss for the Warthogs despite pitching well, going 81/3 innings and giving up three runs on seven hits. Todd Genke notched the win for Salem, pitching two innings of perfect relief.
Salem starter Matt Pool threw well, firing shutout ball for five innings before giving up two runs in the sixth. He went seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out five.
