LANCE CPL. ROBERT S. CARTER and SGT. TIMOTHY F. PHILLIPS recently graduated from Marine Security Guard School at Marine Corps Combat Development Command, Quantico.

Carter, son of John W. Carter of Salem and Jean M. Carter of Roanoke, joined the Marine Corps in December 1993. He is a 1993 graduate of Blacksburg High School.

Phillips, son of Roger M. and Paulette D. Phillips of Vinton, joined the Marine Corps in January 1990. He is a 1989 graduate of Staunton River High School.

PFC. THOMAS M. ROBERTS, son of Peggy S. and Thomas M. Roberts Jr. of Roanoke, recently reported for duty with Eighth Communications Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Roberts is a 1995 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

PETTY OFFICER SECOND CLASS DONALD J. MEYER, son of Eugene and Lenore Meyer of Roanoke, is serving aboard the USS George Washington out of Norfolk.

Meyer graduated from William Fleming High School in 1982, Virginia Western Community College in 1984 and Roanoke College in 1987.

He has been in the Navy for eight years.

SGT. ELISABETH M. DuBARRY of Salem has been chosen as the Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter for the second quarter of the training year 1996 for the 229th Chemical Company of the Virginia Army National Guard in Roanoke.

DuBarry joined the National Guard in December 1987.

SEAMAN RECRUIT DEREK N. JONES, son of Leroy N. Jones and Anna M. Craighead of Buchanan recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

He is a 1991 graduate of James River High School.

CPL. JOHN M. MOREFIELD, son of James E. Morefield of Fincastle, recently graduated from the Marine Corps Corporal's Course, Cherry Point, N.C.

He is a 1992 graduate of Pulaski County High School.

SENIOR AIRMAN MONICA R. BARNETT, daughter of Terry W. and Linda M. Barnett of Roanoke, has been decorated with the Air Force Achievement Medal. It is a symbol of her meritorious service, acts of courage and other accomplishments.

She is a 1989 graduate of Northside High School.

SENIOR MASTER SGT. BETTY P. PALMER, daughter of James C. and Gisela P. Murphy of Roanoke, has graduated from the nine-week U.S. Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy at Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, Montgomery, Ala.

SEAMEN NICOLE L. PIETRAS, KEITH A. BROWN and CLYDE V. MUSE have returned to Bremerton, Wash., after completing a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific Ocean and Persian Gulf aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz.

Pietras, the daughter of James S. and Bonnie L. Pietras of Troutville, is a 1995 graduate of Liberty High School in Bedford.

Brown, son of Ernest R. and Bonnie L. Brown of Fincastle, is a 1991 graduate of James River High School in Buchanan and of Virginia College in Roanoke, with an associate degree in applied sciences.

Muse, son of Ruth D. Morris of Roanoke, is a 1992 graduate of William Fleming High School.

SEAMAN CLAUDE A. LEWIS, son of Robert A. and Elizabeth A. Lewis of Roanoke, has been selected as a bus driver for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

Lewis serves as a signalman aboard the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis, based in Norfolk. He is a 1993 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

LT. MARK C. SWITZER, son of James W. and Doris C. Switzer of Roanoke, has returned to Norfolk after a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas with the Standing Naval Forces Atlantic, onboard the USS Simpson.

Switzer is a 1987 graduate of Salem High School and a 1992 graduate of Virginia Tech.

PVT. ROBERT W. SPANGLER, son of Robert W. Spangler of Buchanan and Margaret Breeden of Fincastle, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

He is a 1995 graduate of James River High School in Buchanan.

SEAMAN THOMAS W. PUGH, son of Harry B. Pugh of Blue Ridge, has returned to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, after completing a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf aboard the guided missile frigate USS Reuben James.

He is a 1992 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School in Daleville.

PVT. RICHARD E. KILE, son of Benny C. and Debbie Daugherty of Salem, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

He is a 1995 graduate of Glenvar High School.

PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS SCOTT A. HARMON, son of Kenneth L. and Patty S. Harmon of Vinton, has returned to Norfolk after completing a six-week counter drug operation deployment in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean onboard the USS Mississippi.

He is a 1989 graduate of Staunton River High School.
