Ryan Reeves, a 1995 graduate of Salem High School, will leave July 10 to serve a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chihuahua, Mexico. Reeves, 19, is a former business student at Roanoke College. He is a son of Jim and Ronda Reeves of Salem. He will undergo several weeks of training in Provo, Utah, to work in the Spanish-speaking mission.

Several Virginians were named to national boards at the recent annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention in New Orleans. They include the Rev. Jay D. Owens, pastor of Lynn Haven Church of Vinton, to the Foreign Mission Board; the Rev. Charles G. Fuller, pastor of First Baptist in downtown Roanoke, to the Home Mission Board; and the Rev. Darryl G. Crim, pastor of North Roanoke Church, to the Sunday School Board.

The Rev. Donald E. Carlton has begun his ministry at Windsor Hills United Methodist Church. He has come from a five-year pastorate at Heritage Church, in suburban Lynchburg. The new pastor, 50, began his ministerial career at Fincastle United Methodist Church from 1971 to 1974. Since then, he has served parishes in Staunton, Newport News and Altavista, where he has had a major interest in church growth. His family includes his wife, Amy Poteat Carlton, and grown children in Waynesboro and Richmond. Carlton is originally from Atlanta and was educated at Wake Forest University, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington.

The Rev. Marianne Bird has returned to her former home in the Roanoke Valley for part-time assignment as pastor of Crockett Springs United Methodist Church near Shawsville. Bird left Roanoke seven years ago for Duke Divinity School, was ordained a deacon in 1992, and has since served the New Hope Church near Ferrum and Hurt United Methodist Church south of Lynchburg. This year the Crockett Springs pastorate has been separated from the nearby Alta Mons retreat center with the employment of Bob Giesy as the full-time camp director. Bird said she will work about 30 hours weekly with the camp and neighborhood congregation.

Two retired pastors, the Rev. Edward Taylor and the Rev. C. Warner Crumb, both permanent residents of the Roanoke Valley, have been assigned to jointly serve Melrose United Methodist Church. Taylor served Grace United Methodist and the Elliston-Lafayette congregations earlier in his 40-year career. Crumb is a former Eastern Shore District superintendent.

The Rev. Dr. John Copenhaver, a native of Roanoke and graduate of Patrick Henry High School, has been awarded a Mednick Fellowship from the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges. Copenhaver, professor of religion and philosophy at Shenandoah University in Winchester and an ordained United Methodist, will use the funds to study in Oxford, England, and to write a book on the relationship of science and religion.

Professional recognition was attained by several Roanoke Valley residents at the recent Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach. Ordained to the full pastoral status as elders were the Rev. Bryan D. Oldham and the Rev. Marianne Bird. Ordained to the first ministerial order of deacons were Robert Hoskins, John Max Brown and Dan and Pam Horner. Consecrated to the professional lay order of diaconal minister were Hannah Glisson of Salem and Charlene Landes of Roanoke. |MUSICAL EVENTS| A patriotic musical, "Freedom Isn't Free," will be presented Sunday at 11 a.m. at Mineral Springs Baptist Church on Virginia 24 near Vinton. Special recognition will be given to veterans of American wars.

A Living Free Concert featuring Cheri Keaggy, a contemporary Christian artist, and Michael Brown, Roanoke Valley musician and minister to substance abusers, is scheduled July 27 at 7 p.m. at New Life Temple on Airport Road Northwest. To order the $5 tickets, call 774-9798 or (800) 774-9798.

Williams Memorial Baptist Church, 2105 Carroll Ave. N.W., has scheduled a concert Sunday at 2 p.m. by the Souls of Faith choir of Hill Street Baptist Church. Guest preacher will be the Rev. Johnny R. Stone. The program will honor the Rev. Paul Johnson on his 17th anniversary in the Williams Memorial pastorate. |BUILDING CHANGES| Edgewood Christian Church congregation has approved redecoration and remodeling of its worship center with a fund-raising rally scheduled for July 14. The $40,000 project is expected to result in new carpet, pews and other improvements. |SPECIAL EVENTS| Roman Catholics who do not attend church because of habit, misunderstanding or personal resentment are the target of Landings, a program of re-entry. A Landings group will begin meeting in July at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 314 Turner Road in Salem. Call Kay Owens at 986-0852 or 992-2865 for more information and to set a time.

Homecoming will take place July 21 at First Baptist Church in Buchanan. Preaching at 11 a.m. will be the Rev. Samuel Jackson of Roanoke. Worship at 3 p.m. will be led by the Rev. Ivory Morton and the choir of Reed Street Baptist Church in Vinton.

A bus trip sponsored by radio station Spirit FM 103.7 to the musical Passion Play, "Worthy Is the Lamb," being staged in Emerald Isle, N.C., is scheduled Aug. 17-18. Prices per person range from $99 to $149. Call 774-9798 for details.

Calvary United Methodist Church, 845 Hemlock Road, Salem, plans a patriotic celebration tonight at 7. Special music will be provided by Blue Grass Inspirations along with picnic refreshments for the community.
