An Alexandria police officer fatally shot a man who was beating her partner in the head and face with a brick, police said.
Daniel Shaw, 34, of Alexandria began behaving irrationally about 8 a.m. Saturday outside a high-rise apartment building, witnesses said.
Alexandria police officers Charlotte Mitchell and Shannon Soriano tried to subdue Shaw. After spraying him with pepper spray, he charged them and began assaulting Soriano, police said.
``All of a sudden, he charged the officers, grabbed one of the females and began to smash her head and face with one of the bricks,'' said Alexandria Police Lt. John Crawford. ``She was starting to lose consciousness.''
Mitchell, a nine-year veteran of the force who police said feared for her partner's life, then shot Shaw. He died at the scene.
Soriano was treated for a head injury at Washington Hospital Center and released.
Mitchell was placed on routine administrative paid leave pending an investigation.
