The Roanoke Hawks split their first two games at the AAU national 16-and-under boys' basketball tournament in Fayetteville, N.C.
In their pool-play opener Sunday night, the Hawks dropped a 61-52 decision to Michigan. Raymond Arrington of Liberty High School led the way for Roanoke with 14 points.
Arrington paced the Hawks on Monday with 31 points as Roanoke bounced back with a 79-71 victory over Jackson, Miss. Robert Carson (Liberty) and Philip Klaus (Blacksburg) added 13 points each, and Klaus grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Roanoke needs a victory over Chicago today in its final pool-play game to advance.
In other sports news in the region:
* Jay Foley continues to run well on the Southern Modified Auto Racing Teams (SMART) circuit, finishing in the top five in all three races this past weekend.
Foley finished third Thursday at Franklin County Speedway, fourth Friday at the Tri-Counties track in Lenoir, N.C., where he won his first pole, and fifth Saturday at Caraway in Asheboro, N.C. Foley was the only one out of 24 drivers who finished in the top five in all three races.
As a result of his successful weekend, Foley has moved into second place in the season points standings, trailing only Gary Myers by 45 points. The SMART series takes a long layoff before racing on Labor Day weekend in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
* Roanoke golfers Chris Pugh and Lee Taylor advanced to the match-play portion in the 14-15 age group of the Bobby Bowers Junior tournament at Springfield C.C. Pugh shot a 77 and Taylor an 80 in stroke play to gain two of the 32 spots in match play, which gets under way today.
