Galax's Tammy Cox might not have been the most valuable player for her team, but she made quite an impression with 13 points as the West beat the East 74-57 Monday night in the Virginia High School Coaches Association girls' basketball all-star game at the Hampton Coliseum.
Cox tied Kate Von Holle of James Robinson for scoring honors. However, Von Holle, who helped lead her team to the Group AAA championship, was chosen the most valuable player.
Cox put it out of reach in the fourth quarter when she scored five consecutive points as the West built a 63-46 lead.
Salem's Shellie Johnson added six points, including four straight free throws in the second quarter. William Byrd's Cathy Smith scored all of her four points in the final quarter as the West pulled away.
The West led most of the game and took the lead for good in the first quarter when Von Holle scored her first points to make the score 8-7.
This was the sixth consecutive win for the West in the series.
