A healthy increase in new car registrations in June helped boost the year's total almost to last year's level.
In the first six months of this year, 4,158 new cars were registered in the Roanoke Valley, 1.9 percent below 4,240 in the first half of 1995.
June brought 820 registrations, 14.9 percent fewer than 964 in May but up 12.3 percent from 730 in June 1995. Of the total, 425 were registered in Roanoke, 329 in Roanoke County and 66 in Salem.
Also added to this week's regional indicators, the Norfolk Southern coal loadings were off dramatically last week because of the annual coal miners' holiday. Non-union loadings were impacted by Independence Day.
