Health insurance seminar for seniors
LOA Area Agency on Aging and the Virginia State Corporation Commission's Bureau of Insurance will sponsor a seminar for senior citizens on Medicare benefits, long-term care, Medigap and HMO health insurance, July 18 at 10 a.m. in the community room of the Brambleton Center, 3738 Brambleton Ave.
The two-hour presentation by insurance professionals and LOA representatives includes a question and answer period. Volunteers from the LOA Health Insurance Counseling program will help with individual problems from noon to 1:30 p.m.
The seminar is free, but seating is limited. Call 345-0451 by Friday to register.
Salem Farmers' Festival is July 20
The fifth annual Salem Farmers' Festival will be held July 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The festival will feature four bands and a variety of competitions. For more information, call 375-3057.
VWCC registration for fall begins
Registration for fall semester classes at Virginia Western Community College is July 22 through Aug. 29.
New students should register in the Admissions Office in Fishburn Hall, Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m to 6:30 p.m, and Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Returning students can register by phone July 17-19 by calling 857-7543.
Tuition for Virginia residents is $47.65 per credit hour; for nonresidents it is $157 per credit hour. For more information, call 857-7231.
Roanokers appointed to state boards
Gov. George Allen recently appointed two Roanoke area residents to state boards.
Gilbert E. Butler Jr. of Roanoke, an attorney and real estate developer, was named to the state Library Board. He is a member of the Roanoke Planning Commission and former president of the Roanoke Valley Historical Society.
Thomas T. Lawson of Botetourt County was appointed to the board of trustees of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Lawson is a partner in the law firm of Woods, Rogers and Hazelgrove and is a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He lectures at the University of Virginia, and is a former president of the Roanoke Bar Association. He is also a director for the Roanoke Museum of Fine Art.
Garden and craft contests Saturday
Judging of vegetables, fruit, flowers and crafts at the Vinton Farmer's Market will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ribbons and prize money will be awarded in youth and adult divisions. To enter the competition or for more information, call Mary Beth Layman at 983-0613.

The YWCA is seeking nominations for the YWCA Women of Achievement award, which honors women who have demonstrated professional achievement, leadership and a commitment to community service.
