Huge pillar toppled at Arlington
ARLINGTON - A huge granite pillar at the entrance of Arlington National Cemetery was knocked over and broken by construction workers who were digging around its base.
The pillar is one of four, each 50 feet tall, dedicated by President Herbert Hoover in 1932 as part of the grand ceremonial entrance to the cemetery.
The damage occurred as a worker was excavating near the 500-ton pillar as part of the construction work for a memorial honoring women in the military.

Nelson County to hire jail worker
LOVINGSTON - Nelson County will hire another employee to ease a manpower shortage at the county jail, which lost its state certification when an inspector found it unmanned during a surprise visit.
The new employee will free a Sheriff's Office dispatcher to cover shifts at the jail, Nelson County Administrator John D. Cutlip said Tuesday. The Board of Supervisors approved the hiring of an additional dispatcher Monday.
The jail was decertified after a Department of Corrections inspector found it unattended during a visit in May. The jailer on duty at the time was escorting an inmate to a hearing at the courthouse, located about 10 yards away.
The jail was ordered to close July 1, but a judge granted a temporary injunction to allow officials to resolve staffing problems.

Lewis Wayne Knighton, 31, and a friend were fishing Tuesday evening when their boat capsized, said Tom McElroy of the state Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Knighton could not swim and quickly disappeared, while Clayton Gibson was able to swim to shore, McElroy said.
