ALDERMAN, Roland Walter, 80, of Galax, died Wednesday, July 10, 1996 in Waddell Nursing Home. Mr. Alderman was born in Carroll Co., Va. on April 15, 1916 to the late William A. Alderman and Nella Jennings Alderman. He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Benford (Beulah) Hurd, Miss Ava Alderman both of Galax, Mrs. Webb (Irene) Pinner of Suffolk, Mrs. Joe (Arlie) Williams of Kokomo, Ind.; brother, Clarence Alderman of Galax; eight nieces and nephews; several great-niece s and great-nephews. BAUER, Martin Josef, 91 of Blacksburg, died Thursday, July 11, I 996. Unfailingly responsible, reliable and relied-upon, through the Great Depressions, banishment from home by the Nazis, and two intercontinental migrations as well as several shorter ones. BLAKE, Lucille, of Bedford, departed this life on Wednesday, July 10, 1996, in Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Eunice Blake Stewart of Goode; one son, Mr. Walter S. Blake of Dallas, Texas; one son-in-law, Mr. Alfred Stewart Jr.; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Janice C. Blake; five grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. BLAND, Joseph Wayne, 41, of Boones Mill, died Wednesday, July 10, 1996, in a local hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was formerly of Buchanan County. He was born November 15, 1954. He was raised in Michigan. Joe was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the Army. He attended Southwest Community College. Joe was a graduate of East Tennessee State University, where he received degrees in Psychology and Business Administration. He taught school for four years and became County Administrator of Buchanan County. Joe chose to become a stockbroker with J. C. Bradford Company in Roanoke and later became Executive Director of S.T.E.P. for both Franklin and Patrick Counties. He was a member of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Bland; and his grandfather, Howard Pruitt. He is survived by his wife, Pamela Matney Bland; son and daughter, Aaron N. and Megan J. Bland, all of Boones Mill; his mother, Joy Rampley; stepfather, Chuck Rampley of Abingdon; grandmother, RoseElla Pruitt, Buchanan; two half sisters, Theresa Crist and Rhonda Rampley, both of Abingdon. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Satur day in Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church with Dr. F. Tupper Garden officiating. BUTZ, Lynford W., 78, of Roanoke, formerly of Bethlehem, Pa., died in a Roanoke hospital Tuesday evening, July 9, 1996. He retired as assistant division superintendent, Blast Furnace of Bethlehem Steel. He was a member of Ezra Royal Arch Chapter 216 of Pennsylvania, H. Stanley Goodwin Lodge #648 of Pennsylvania, Bethlehem Commandery #90, Knights Templar, and Bethlehem Council #36 Royal and Select Masters. In Roanoke he was a member of the Roanoke Scottish Rite, Kazim Temple, and the Kazim Chanters. Surviving are his wife, Ruth H. Butz; two sons and daughter-in-law, Robert W. Butz of Charlottesville, John F. and Geraldine M. Butz of Massachusetts; four grandchildren, David Butz of Washington, Matthew Butz , Mary Butz, Elizabeth Butz, all of Massachusetts. A Masonic memorial service will be conducted in Oakey's Roanoke Chapel 12 noon on Friday. The family will receive friends after the memorial service at Kazim Temple. His body will be taken to Bethlehem, Pa., where a funeral will held at the Pearson Funeral Home on Monday with the burial in Memorial Park in Bethlehem, Pa. COOPER, Walter Hunt, 71, of Rocky Mount, died Wednesday, July 10, 1996. Born January 21, 1925, he was a son of the late John William and Nellie Hunt Cooper. He was preceded in death by a brother, Russell G. Cooper. Mr. Cooper was a veteran of the United States Air Force; former owner of Lynch Farm Equipment and Hardware; member of the Rocky Mount Town Council for 26 years; a member of the Rocky Mount Fire Department for 20 years; member of the Rocky Mount United Methodist Church; church board; sang in the choir; and the Methodist Men's Group. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Lynch Cooper of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Don Scarborough, Jacksonville, Fla.; one granddaughter, Christie Jammes, Jacksonville, Fla.; one great-granddaughter, Kayleigh Jammes, Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Laura C. Blair, Rocky Mount; one brother and sister-in-law, Colonel John D. and Elizabeth D. Cooper, Rocky Mount; several nieces and nephews also survive. DILLON, Carol G., 51, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, July 11, 1996. Carol earned her Associates Degree at Virginia Western Community College. She is survived by her husband, Joe Morris Dillon; four sons, Rusty, Randy, Brian, and Adam and wife Teresa; daughter, Debbie and husband Wayne Rucker; eight grandchildren, and sister, Doreen and husband Ray Rainville. DONNELLY, Virginia Irvin Loope, 76, of Salem, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 1996. She was born of the late Selma J. and Naomi of Salem. She was a resident and president of the resident council at Brandon Oaks Health Center, and longtime resident of Mt. Pleasant community. She was retired as the former owner/operator of the College Grill Restaurant in Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph M. Donnelly Sr.; son, Thomas Patrick Donnelly; and daughter-in-law, Loretta R. Donnelly. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Christina Rose and Charles M. Charlton, Virginia Anna and John P. Newton; son, Joseph M. Donnelly Jr.; sister, Juanita L. Neale of Manchester, Maine; brothers, Selma J. Loope Jr. of Fontania, Calif., James Loope of Mineral Wells, Texas; four granddaughters and their spouses; five grandsons; three great-grandchildren. DURHAM, John Lewis, 74, of Boones Mill, died Thursday, July 11, 1996, at his residence. He was a son of the late Riley H. (``Gager"") and Naomi Durham, and was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffrey Durham, and three brothers, Jack, Henry and Fred Durham. Surviving are his wife, Tiny Boothe Durham of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Jerry Brumbaugh of Pleasant Hill, Ohio; one son, Ronnie Durham of Goodview; his grandchildren, Corrinna Durham, and Erin and Micah Brumbaugh; two sisters, Carrie Hall and Lula Jennings of Boones Mill, and several nieces and nephews. EANES, Lucy Margaret, 67, died Tuesday, July 9, 1996, in Fairborn, Ohio. She was formerly of Roanoke. She is survived by three children, Don R. Vaught of Richmond, Va, Lynda V. Spangler of Littleton, Colo, and Joseph C. Vaught of Myrtle Beach, S.C. She is also survived by her two sisters Helen E. Overstreet of Vinton, and Ruby E. Lovern of Roanoke. Ms. Eanes was preceded by her father and mother, John C. and Fannie E. Eanes, and brother, J. Herbert Eanes. She has five grandchildren. HAGY, Wiley E., Sr., 73, of Route 2, Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, July 10, 1996, in Wythe County Community Hos pital. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4667 and Freedom Tabernacle of Atkins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia C. Hagy, and is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Louise and Charles Hall, Patsy and Wayne Armstrong and Nellis Hall of Rural Retreat; sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Fonda Hagy of Wytheville, and Wiley and Vivian Hagy of Rural Retreat; stepson and daughter-in-law, Donald and Rose Marie Reardon of Greensboro; brothers, Shelby Hagy of Lynchburg and James Leroy Hagy of Richmond; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and seven stepgrandchildren. HURST, Faye L., 89, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, July 10, 1996. She was the widow of Elmer P. Hurst, a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church and a member of the Republican Women's Club. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia H. Matheny. Surviving inclu de a daughter, Betty Custer, Yorktown; brother, W. Harold Looney, Bluefield, W.Va.; sister, Edna Looney, Princeton, W.Va.; two granddaughters, Allyson Green and Stacy Custer; two grandsons, David and Donald Custer; one great-grandson, Cameron Green. JORDAN, Beth C., 89, of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, July 9, 1996, at Heritage Hall Health Care Center. She was born February 12, 1907, in Roanoke, to the late Frank and Bessie Gregory Jordan. She received her B.S. degree in 1928 from Madison College, Harrisonburg, and her M.S. degree in 1940 from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tenn., along with completing 45 quarter hours at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, in 1959-1960. She was a Professor of Home Economics and the program leader at V.P.I. from 1959-1972. She was the Area Supervisor of Home Economics Education Service for the State Department of Education from 1955-1959, and was an instructor at Radford College from 1948-1949, also serving as the Director of Radford Nursery School for the summers of 1942 and 1943. She was a member of the National Education Association (life member), Virginia Education Association, Home Economics Education Assoc./NEA, V.P.I., Education Assoc., American Home Economics Assoc., Virginia Home Economics Assoc., Virginia Home Economics Teachers Assoc., National Association-Home Economics Teachers Educators, Southern Council on Teacher Education, Association of Higher Education, National Society for the Study of Education, American Vocational Assoc., Virginia Vocational Assoc., American Vocational Education Research Assoc., Delta Kappa Gamma Society, American Association University Women, and V.P.I. Faculty Women Association. She also was the President of the Virginia Vocational Association, Virginia Home Economics Teacher's Association, and the V.P.I. Chapter of Virginia Education Association, and was chairman of the College and University Section Virginia Home Economics Associ ation, the Public Relations Committee, VVA, Nominating Committee, District III, VHEA, Fellowship Committee, AAUW, School of Home Economics Faculty Committee, and the AVA Membership Committee, Region III, a member of the VHEA Scholarship Committee, VEA Special Services Committee, VHEA Consumer Interest Committee, Vice-president, Nu Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, and President of Alpha Lambda Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma. Ms. Jordan was an Honorary member of the State Association, Young Homemakers of Virginia, Blue Ridge Area Young Homemakers of Virginia, and the Virginia Association, Future Homemakers of America, and selected by the Virginia Vocational Association to be the recipient of the 1968 Sears Foundation Award of a life membership in the American Vocational Association. She was a resource person and consultant for revision of the curriculum guide for the high school home economics program in Virginia, member of the evaluation team for the Dilenowisco Four I's Project for two years, resource person for Project Advance-Special Program for the Disadvantaged, Montgomery County, Virginia, and was part of a state wide study along with Rosa H. Loving, ``Young Women in Virginia: A Ten Year Study of Girls Enrolled in the Tenth Grade in Virginia High Schools in 1954-1955.'' She retired in 1972. She is survived by a niece, Mrs. Jean Heimann, Miami, Fla.; a nephew, Dennis Jordan, Plano, Texas; a great-niece, Jean-Marie Heimann; and several cousins; and a special friend, Patricia Wright. Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 13, 1996, at 11 a.m. at Sunrise Burial Park, Fairlawn, with Rev. Kathy Carpenter officiating. KEMP, Mark Allen, 38, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 1996. He was employed with Piedmont Airlines and USAir for sixteen years. He was an active member of Emmanuel Wesleyan Church and was a youth sponsor. He was preceded in death by his father, H. L. Kemp, Jr. He is survived by his beloved wife of seventeen years, Marilyn M. Kemp; beloved son, Todd Russell Kemp; mother, Mary Atkins Kemp; brother and sister-in-law, Douglas L. and Connie F. Kemp; loving nieces, Kristen L. Kemp and Mandy R. Shipman, Carrie Asher and Tracy Fryer; special friends, Robert and Carol Gentilini, and church family of Emmanuel Wesleyean Church. KINCAID, Virginia Campbell, of Collington Life Care, Mitchellville, Md., died Wednesday, July 10, 1996. She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Charles Morison Kincaid; mother of Elizabeth K. Heagy, Mary Talor Cheek; grandmother of Vivian Heagy, Melinda Heagy Peters, John Heagy, Sydney Cheek, and Hannah Cheek; great-grandmother of Joshua Ganey; sister of Mildred Pompai of Chicago, Ill. LANUM, John Henry, Jr., 85, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, July 11, 1996, at his home. He was born June 4, 1911, son of the late John H. Lanum Sr. and Hortence Campbell Lanum. John attended Oronoco Church of the Brethren, and was owner and operator of Lanum's Jewelry in Buena Vista for 37 years. Surviving are his wife, Essie Byers Lanum; two sons and daughters-in-law, John H. Lanum III and Judith of Ironto and Lewis S. Lanum and Nadine of Danville; three grandsons, John H. Lanum IV and Joe Lanum of Roanoke and Craig Lanum of Danville; two granddaughters, Julia DeSouza of Florida and Helena Chancy of Ohio; three great-grandsons, Shawn, Brian and Allen, and one sister and brother-in-law, Helen Lanum Hardy and Fred of Powhatan. MALOYED, James B., (``J. B.""), 75 of Broadford, Va., died Thursday, July 11, 1996 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Va. Mr. Maloyed was a life-long resident and farmer of the Broadford area. He was a member of The American Saddlebred Association, and was active in the Virginia and West Virginia Horse Show Association. Mr. Maloyed was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Cookie (Hatfield) Maloyed. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, J. C. and Terri Maloyed, Emory; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Leslie (Betty Maloyed) Payne, Alexandria, Mrs. Jerry (Polly Maloyed) Bise, Tazewell; two brothers, R. H. ""Bob"" Maloyed, Saltville, Alfred Maloyed, Saltville; one sister, Helen Snodgrass, Meadowview; three grandchildren, Ashley Jo Maloyed, Hope Bise and Nat Bise; several nieces and nephews. MEREDITH, Jerry S., 69, of Roanoke, formerly of Greensboro, N.C., passed away Thursday, July 11, 1996. He was a graduate of North Carolina State University. He is survived by his wife, Virginia D. Meredith; sons and daughter-in-law, James K. Meredith, and Ridge D. and Chris Meredith; daughter and son-in-law, Kyle and Frank Walton; brother and sister-in-law, James C. and Karen Meredith; sisters and brothers-in-la w, Elizabeth and Numa R. PUCKETT, Thomas Greever, 90, of Tazewell, formerly of Sugar Grove, died Wednesday, July 10, 1996, in a Tazewell hospital. Born on August 18, 1905, in Thompson Valley, he was a son of the late Charlie William and Pollie Osborne Puckett. He was a member of Wharf Hill United Methodist Church in Sugar Grove. He was a former coal miner and former volunteer worker at Southwestern State Hospital in Marion. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Mae Elizabeth Asbury Puckett. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family in his generation. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Paul (Jeanette) Gibson of Charlotte, N.C., Judy Suits and her special friend Bob Mathena of Marion, Mrs. Carson (Freda) Evans of North Tazewell and Nadine Clary of Merritt Island, Fla.; two sons, Jasper Puckett and his wife Faye of Charlotte, N.C., and Ronnie Puckett of Birmingham, Ala.; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. RHODES, Dorothy Jeanette, 68, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 1996. Survivors include three daughters, Mary L. Price and Myrtle Darlene Rhodes both of Roanoke, Charlene Denise Jones of Raleigh, N.C.; six sons, Bobby N. Price of San Antonio, Texas, Emmett Rhodes II of Clement, Wis., Norval Jerome Rhodes of Atlanta, Ga, Edward Kirk Rhodes, Keith Anthony Rhodes, James Rodney Rhodes all of Roanoke; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Ligon of Brooklyn, N.Y. 18 Grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; devoted friends, D eacon and Mrs. Lawrence Brown; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. RUDDER, Karl, of Bland, died Wednesday, July 10, 1996 at his residence. He was the son of the late Jesse Adams Rudder and Minnie Lucille Rudder. He is survived by his wife, Lucy Rudder of Bland; son, Jesse Rudder of Bland; brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Addie C. Rudder of Bland; two aunts, Clytis Sisson and Edith Havens. Several cousins and many close friends also survive. A graveside service will be Saturday 1 1 a.m. at the Rudder Family Cemetery, Bland, Va. There will be no visitation or viewing at the funeral home. Those wishing to do so may call at the home at anytime. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Bland County Rescue Squad. The Grubb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

SECRIST, Marie Maxwell, 98, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, July 10, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew M. Secrist, and two brothers. She was a longtime member of the First Church of God, Vinton, and is survived by her church family and many friends. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 1996, by her pastor, Rev. Carl V. Woodie. Burial will be in Mill Creek Cemetery, Botetourt County.
