RADFORD CHURCH TO HONOR LOCAL OLYMPIAN

Radford church to honor local Olympian

Grove United Methodist Church in Radford will honor church member Ben Amonette on Sunday. Amonette will compete in the Olympic Games in Atlanta later this month. Amonette placed second in the recent trials for the U.S. free pistol and air pistol teams. He will compete in the free pistol event July 21 and in the air pistol competition July 23.

In the free pistol competition, Amonette, 41, will have two hours to fire 60 rounds from a .22-caliber pistol at a target 50 meters away. Then he will have 75 seconds to shoot 10 more rounds. In air pistol, competitors shoot at a 3/8-inch target from 10 meters.

Amonette works at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant and is sponsored by the U.S. Army Reserve.

In the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, Amonette placed fifth in the air pistol event and 19th in the free pistol event. In recent trials and competitions, he has been doing better than he did in 1992.

Dublin United Methodist Church will host people of faith from churches throughout the New River Valley in a special Saturday service today at 10 a.m. in response to the recent nationwide wave of church burnings.

The hourlong service will feature hymns, prayers, music and a message from the Rev. Richard J. Patterson, pastor of the church.

"It's just to show our concern. Any Christian church that's been burned we identify with very much," Patterson said.

A special offering to benefit burned churches will be taken, and other area churches will be invited to do the same. 674-5128.
