Both Pulaski County rescue squads have received grants from the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services to buy emergency medical equipment.
The Pulaski County Life Saving Crew has been awarded $44,160 to help buy a new ambulance. The New River Valley Emergency Squad is getting $13,245 to update communication system in three ambulances.
The squads also will use some of the money to each buy two semiautomatic defibrillators, more than doubling the number available in the county. The devices are used to monitor a heart attack patient's cardiac rhythm and to help medical personnel know when an electric shock is needed. The semiautomatic mechanisms are easier to use than manual ones, so more ambulance personnel can be trained to use them.
