GOLF CHAMP INDICTED FOR POSSESSION DRUGS FOUND IN HOME OF FORMER SALEM GYM TEACHER

Local golf standout and former Salem physical education teacher Penny Stallins was indicted Friday on three drug-related felony charges.

A Salem grand jury returned three direct indictments charging 45-year-old Stallins with possession of cocaine and marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of amphetamine.

Police searched Stallins' North Market Street home June3 and found the drugs, Sgt. D.R. Divers said. He would not elaborate on what led to the investigation of Stallins.

Stallins had not been arrested as of Friday evening and did not return a phone call to her home.

Until about a year ago, Stallins was a veteran force on the local women's golf scene.

In 1973, she won the Roanoke Valley Women's Golf Association's City-County Championship. And in 1985-87, she became the first golfer to win the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame women's championship three times straight.

But in the early 1990s, Stallins was slowed by arthritis in her left shoulder and back, according to news reports.

In November 1995, Stallins was granted disability retirement from her job as a physical education and health teacher at Andrew Lewis Middle School, school Superintendent Wayne Tripp said. She had taught the same subjects at Salem High School from 1983-90 before being transferred to Andrew Lewis.

Stallins is the stepdaughter of the late James I. Moyer, a longtime Salem mayor and Roanoke County judge.
