The Roanoke Times is still assessing its losses from last Sunday's newspaper, which carried the weekday price of 35 cents, instead of $1.50, on its front page.
Janet Hollowell, single-copy circulation manager for Times-World Corp., said about 50 retailers sold the edition at the 35-cent rate. Other dealers charged the usual rate.
Many cashiers, she pointed out, merely look at the price printed on an item they sell and are not aware of the customary cost.
Those who sold the paper for 35 cents will be reimbursed, Hollowell said. The collecting of last Sunday's receipts and tallying of the damages will not be completed until this week.
The problem did not affect home-delivery subscriptions, which carry a weekly or weekend rate. And stand-alone boxes were all programmed to accept $1.50.
Hollowell said the problem has arisen in the past when a Saturday edition, which retails for 50 cents, carried a 35-cent price.
