ATKINS, Donald Edward, (K4CZA), 60, of Roanoke, died Saturday, June 20, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, H. Edward Atkins and Dorothy Nichols Atkins. He was a member of Grandin Cour t Baptist Church, president of Mountain View Cemetery and active in the Amateur Radio Club, the Orchid Society and the study of genealogy. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School and attended VPI and State University. Survivors include an uncle, Horace Jr. and wife Angie Nichols of Connecticut; two aunts, Ellen Pickles of Richmond and Audrey Ernst of New Jersey, and very special friends, Hilda P. Basham, Tracie Leigh Basham and Virginia Allison, all of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel at 12 noon Monday by the Rev. Philip E. Motley. BOWLING, Carol Alton, 71, of Pearisburg, died Saturday, July 20, 1996. Mr. Bowling was born on August 12, 1924, in Hinton, W.Va., and was a son of the late William Harvey and Dulcie Vest Bowling. Mr. Bowling was a deacon of Pearisburg Baptist Church, a member of Giles Lodge #106 A.F.&A.M., a Past Patron of Paris Lodge #124 Order of the Eastern Star, and a former employee of Kroger and Blueridge Wholesale. Mr. Bowling also was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Lee Boyer Bowling, and a brother, Bernard Lee Bowling. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Carroll Alton and Judy Bowling of Dublin; a daughter and son-in-law, Connie B. and Steve Strasser of Enoree, S.C., and six grandchildren, Richard Anderson, Tina Pressley, Curry Bowling, Midi Turgerson, Natalie Quesenberry and Cheril Bowling. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, 1996, at Pearisburg Baptist Church, with the Rev. Elmon Thompson officiating. Interment with military honors by the American Legion and VFW will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg. BRUMFIELD, Irvin Ellis, 68, of Salem, died Saturday, July 20, 1996, at his home. Born in Christiansburg, he was a son of the late Marley E. and Myrtle R. Brumfield. He was a member of Crystal Springs Baptist Church and the VFW. He served in the U. S. Army in Korea, and retired from the V. A. Medical Center. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Wilma T. Brumfield; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael R. and Sharon Brumfield; a granddaughter, Amanda Rae; a great-granddaughter, Jordan Rae; a brother, Arnold Brumfield of Christiansburg, and sisters, Hazel Linkenhoker and Irene Phillips of Christiansburg, Mary Logan of Roanoke and Betty Burk of Suffolk. EDWARDS, Bernice Welch, 79, of Thaxton, went to be with the Lord Friday, July 19, 1996. She was born on April 10, 1917 in Amherst Co., a daughter of the late Albert Welch and Fannie Dooley Welch. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Allen Edwards and a son, Wayne Lee Edwards. She was a member of the Christian Life Ministries. GAYLOR, Lauraign Cook, 89, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, July 19, 1996, in Friendship Health Care Center. She was the widow of Jesse O. Gaylor, and was preceded in death by a son, Jesse E. (``Pete"") Gaylor, and three daughters, Brenda Gaylor, Mrs. Marie Ridenhour and Mrs. Norma Scott. Mrs. Gaylor was a former member of the Rachel Rebekah Lodge #4, the VFW and a member of Oakland Baptist Church. She was retired from Mill End Fabric Center. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Bea Gaylor of Vinton, James W. Gaylor of Louisville, Ky., and Rochelle and Trula Gaylor of Roanoke; a son-in-law, William Ridenhour of Roanoke; 17 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 22, 1996, in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton, with the Rev. H. Kelly Dampeer Sr. officiating. Stewart Sr. of Poquoson; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert H. Jr. and Wanda Jean Guill of Boones Mill; three grandchildren, Sherry Guill of Boones Mill, Robert M. Stewart Jr. of Williamsburg and Mary Lynn Reagan of Easley, S.C.; two great-grandsons, Robert Bradley Stewart and Joshua Campbell; two brothers, Ralph W. Parsons of Roanoke and Eugene Parsons of Huntsville, Ala., and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Moody of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 22, 1996, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Steele and Dr. Harry Y. Gamble officiating. HUMPHREYS, Roy Lee, 71, of Buena Vista, died Friday, July 19, 1996 at his residence. Born September 8, 1924 in Rockbridge County, the son of the late Robert L. and Pauline Campbell Humphreys. He was U. S. Army veteran having served World War II. He retired after 34 years at Burlington Industries as a weaver, a member of the Stone Church Brethren, American Legion Post 126 and former member of the Buena Vista Rescue Squad. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carolyn Humphreys. Surviving is his wife, Dorothy Staton Humphreys; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry C. and Brenda Humphreys and Patrick Arnold and Lynne Humphreys, all of Roanoke; grandchildren, Seth, Ian, Garth, Sarah and Ryan; two brothers, Bobby Humphries, of Tampa, Fla., Lester Humphries, of Clinton, Iowa and one sister, Gladys Smith, of Tampa, Fla. and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted Monday, July 22, 1996 at p.m. at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ron Thompson and Rev. Joseph Grow officiating. LEE, Lucian Virgil, 66, of Roanoke, died Friday, July 19, 1996. Was preceded in death by his parents, Ramey P. and Floetha Lee; brother, William (Bill) Lee ; sister, Kay Lee Webber; stepsons, W.C. Hickam and Thom Hickam. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. Mr. Lee retired from G.E. with over thirty years service and was well known in the Roanoke Valley and New Castle area as a vocalist. He was Past Master of Mountain Lodge 140 A.F. and F.M., Past Patron of Mountain Chapter 163 O.E.S., both of New Castle, D.C. Shanks Number 31 R.A.M., Bayrad Number 15 K.T., Kazim Temple Shrine, was an member o f VFDA Post 4491, of New Castle. He is survived by his wife, Juanita M. Lee; stepdaughter, Vicki and husband, Jim Leonard; step daughter-in -law, Carolyn Hickam Raines; grandchildren, Nichole and husband, Scott Witt, Jamie, Sarah and Matthew Leonard; great-grandson, Tyler Leonard; sisters, Geraldine Johnson, Pat and husband, Mike Childers; brothers, Bruce Lee, Jim Lee and wife, Penny, John Lee and wife, Linda and Bill Lee Jr. and wife, Susan; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Monday at the Lotz Salem Chapel by Rev. David R. Miller with Masonic Graveside services to be held by Mountain Lodge Number 140 A.F. and A.M. at Sherwood Memorial Park. MEREDITH, Robyn Kimberly, 41, passed away on July 19, 1996 in the Franklin Health Care Center, Rocky Mount, from complications associated with multiple scelerosis. She is survived by her father and stepmother, General Tom and Patricia Meredith, of Penhook; her mother and stepfather, Marjorie and Tom Mitts, of Great Falls; her sister, Marjorie Poyck, of Fredericksburg; three stepsisters, Frances Timberlake and Mary Reed, of Warrenton and Trisha Carson, of Tyndall AFB, Fla.; a stepbrother, Paul Carson; a niece, Elizabeth Poyck, of Washington, D.C. and a nephew, Kevin Poyck of Lexington, South Carolina. ROBERTSON, Catherine W., 98, of Richmond, died Friday evening, July 19, 1996, at Westminister Canterbury in Richmond. She was born Nov ember 5, 1897, in Roanoke, and was the daughter of the late Silas Walthall and the late Cora Alice Bryan. Mrs. Robertson was very active in the Presbyterian Church in Norfolk and Richmond and was a Red Cross volunteer at the McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond. She had resided at Westminister Canterbury since 1976. Mrs. Robertson was married to Douglas Pitzler Robertson, who died in 1961. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Catherine W. Carson; and a half brother, William Walthall. Surviving are a daughter, Ann R. Heard, Berryville; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, John Walthall, Sheffield, Ala. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside, Evergreen Burial Park, Roanoke, at 12 noon Monday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to a favorite charity.
