The once sizable Southwest Virginia contingent at the Women's State Amateur and Senior Women's State Amateur championships in Hot Springs is down to two.
On a day that saw five area players eliminated, Salem's Lee Shirley and Dot Bolling each survived close calls in Wednesday's second round of match play.
With her game not clicking as it did in Monday's qualifier in which she shot a career-best 72, Shirley struggled before dispatching Boodie McGurn of Richmond, 2 and 1.
``I'm going to have to improve and step up my caliber of play if I expect to hang around,'' Shirley said. ``I haven't played particularly well in either of my matches. I've made one birdie in two days, so I'm lucky to still be alive in this thing.''
Shirley will face Sarah Kayson of Reston in this morning's quarterfinals. Kayson advanced Wednesday with a 2-up triumph over Fran Hensley of Martinsville.
Shirley was the only one of six Southwest Virginians to advance to the quarters. Besides Hensley, other Wednesday losers included Roanokers Kathy Hull and Sara Cole, Martinsville's Jessica Adams and Wytheville's Joannah Pattison.
Hull was beaten 4 and 3 by Nokesville's Patt Anctil, while Cole was trampled 7 and 6 by four-time champion Jane Mack of Richmond. Adams went down 3 and 2 to Sherry Zaleski of Manassas, while Pattison was knocked off 4 and 2 by Kimbra Patterson of Ft. Belvoir.
Bolling had her hands full with Glen Allen's Joan Darden before winning 2-up. The reigning Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame champion will face defending champion Chris Epperly of Virginia Beach in today's semifinals. Epperly advanced with a 6-and-5 romp over Earlysville's Robbye Youel.
