Salem pitchers were rocked for six runs in the fifth inning as the Wilmington Blue Rocks rolled to a 9-3 victory over the Avalanche on Friday night in a Carolina League baseball game at Frawley Stadium. (Box score in Baseball Scoreboard.)
Salem took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Chad Gambill singled, took third on a double by Mike Higgins and scored on a groundout by Elvis Pena. Higgins scored on a groundout by Garrett Neubart.
Donovan Delaney started the decisive inning for Wilmington with a single. Avalanche starter Mike Vavrek (8-5) then walked Jimmie Byington, Al Shirley and Brian Teeters to force in the first run. Byington scored when Pena misplayed a grounder hit by Sergio Nunez. Alejandro Prieto's single scored Shirley to make it 3-0. Carlos Mendez drove in the fourth run with a sacrifice fly, and Ramy Brooks singled to score Nunez and Prieto as the Blue Rocks went up 6-2.
Salem closed to 6-3 when John Giudice singled home Neubart in the sixth, but Wilmington added two runs in its half of the sixth and one in the eighth to give the victory to Dustin Brixey (7-3).
