BLACKWELL, Doris Prillaman, 74, of Rocky Mount, died Saturday, July 27, 1996. Born September 28, 1921, she was a daughter of the late John M. and Nannie Sue Clark Prillaman. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Andrew Blackwell, brother, Jack Prillaman, sister, Dorothy Jane Prillaman and great-grandson, Justin Thomas Blackwell. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Howard Webb of Bassett; four sons and daughters-in-law, Fred W. and Elizabeth Blackwell, Thomas and Jean Blackwell, Billy T. and Anita Blackwell, Kenneth and Cindy Blackwell, all of Rocky Mount; four sisters, Louella Armstrong of Vernon, Fla., Lucy Rakes of Galax, Lolene Moore, Mollie Dalton, both of Bassett; five brothers, Buren Prillaman of Martinsville, Dewey Prillaman of Collinsville, John J. Prillaman, Billy Prillaman, both of Bassett, Wayne Prillaman of Charlotte, N.C.; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive. COLEMAN, Lillian N., 90, of Roanoke, died Friday, July 26, 1996. Born November 28, 1905 in the County of Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Fannie B. Nowlin. Mrs. Coleman was retired from Oakey's Funeral Service and was preceded in death by her husband, George R. Coleman, and a daughter, Edith Langhorne Coleman. Survivors include two daughters, Alice Paige Crawley, and Georgia C. Reeves, both of Roanoke; three grandchildren, James Crawley, David Crawley and wife, Marjorie, and Edith McGhee; eight great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Hester Coleman Petty, Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday from Maple Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Vater Colbert officiating. Interment will follow in Williams Memorial Park. DEAN, Vivian Edmonia P., of Roanoke, passed away Friday, July 26, 1996. She was born in Roanoke to the late Orville B. and Helen R. Preston. Mrs. Dean was a product of the Roanoke City Schools and briefly attended school in Columbus, Ohio. At an early age, she professed faith in Christ and joined the Mount Zion Baptist Church (presently, Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church). She was an active member of the Deaconess Board, Pastor's Aide and Senior Usher Board No. 2, until her health prevented her attendance. In the mid 80's, she was chosen ``Mother of the Year"" in her church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. William Harry Dean. She leaves to mourn their loss a son, William C. (Adean) Vaughn; sisters, Mrs. Jeanette H. Buckner and Mrs. Eloise E. Preston, all of Roanoke; brothers, Mr. Ralph E. Preston, Plainsfield, N.J. and Mr. Garland B. Preston, Silver Springs, Md.; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Doris M. Preston, Plainsfield, N.J., Mrs. Ruth V. Hurt and Mrs. Elouise Harrington, both of Roanoke; two very devoted nephews, Tony (Deborah) Preston and Lewis D. Buckner, both of Roanoke; six grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greate r Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The Rev. Cedric Malone will officiate, assisted by District Elder Delmar Jackson. DILLON, Dorothy Hutchinson, 81, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, July 27, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, S. Clay Dillon. She is survived by a daughter, Rebecca A. Dillon of Roanoke, and nephew and nieces, Bobby R. and Meryl B. Mize, Betty Mize McCormack and Jackie Lloyd, all of Roanoke. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 29, 1996, at Mountain View Cemetery in Vinton, with the Rev. Harold C. Lewis officiating. DOUTHAT, Mary Annie, of 501 College Ave., Pembroke, died Friday evening, July 26, 1996 in the neighborhood she loved, surrounded by ne ighbors and friends. Born in Pembroke, she was a daughter of the late Lon and Maggie Meredith Martin. She was the wife of the late Jacob Fred Douthat. Mary retired from the Coning Dept. of Hoechst-Celanese Plant in 1970 with 32 years service. Surviving are her daughter, Joan and son-in-law, Michael Miller of Pembroke; her son, Glenn and his daughters, Lori and Nikki Douthat, all of Pembroke; her sister, Ellen and brother-in-law, Bob Bracken of Pembroke; and her nephew, Sam Bracken of Pembroke. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, July 29, 1996 at 11 a.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke, with the Rev. Eddie Kendall and the Rev. Shahn Wilburn officiating. Mrs. Goggin wa s a former active member in the South Roanoke Garden Club, and the Baptist Center on Elm Ave. She was a past president of the Valley Baptist W.M.U., and Past Worthy Matron of the Carrie Lee Chapter of the Eastern Star. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, William R. and Shirley J. ROBERTSON, Virginia Guerin Eddy, 48, of 560 Westview Avenue, Bedford, died Friday, July 26, 1996. She was preceded in death by her father, Fredrick H. Guerin Jr. She is survived by her mother, Virginia P. Guerin; husband, Jeffrey C. Robertson; daughter, Julie Eddy Walker; brothers, Rick, Richard and Charles Guerin, and sister, Mary Louise G. Virginia was employed as vice president of Property Management Corporation of Virginia, and served as a member of the Housing and Redevelopment Authority in Bedford from 1989 to present. She was the vice president of the Virginia Rural Rental Housing Authority Association and a member of its board of directors. SLICER, Rev. J. Burdette Jr., 78, of Yorktown, Va., formerly of Roanoke, went to be be with the Lord Saturday, July 13, 1996. Born September 29, 1917 in Roanoke, he was a son of the late John Burdette and Jane Elizabeth Giles Slicer. He was a graduate of Roanoke College and Union Theological Seminary, and was ordained July 30, 1944 as an Evangelist by Norfolk Presbytery. A former member of West End Presbyterian Church, Roanoke, and 1 of 3 from the church to enter the ministry, he was Pastor of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, Hampton, Va for over 40 years. His ministry touched the lives of many. Overseas highlights include preaching and witnessing in Bermuda and the Caribbean, London, Tel-Aviv, and wit h interpreters in Athens and Rome. On two occasions he met with the late David Ben-Gurion, then Prime Minister of Israel in the "" Little White House"" in Tel-Aviv. He was elected Moderator of the new Presbyterian Church in America in 1974, and completed the Billy Graham School of Evangelism in Norfolk, Va in 1974. He conducted week-long crusades in Virginia and North Carolina; attended and completed the basic and advanced seminars presented by Basic Youth Conflicts Institute taught by Rev. Bill Gothard, and was currently a member of James River Presbytery, Presbyterian Church in America. Later, he was licensed with the Reserve Life Insurance Company and John Hancock Insurance Company, and was recognized as Agent of the Year in 1978, 1982 and 1983. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Young Slicer; son and daughter-in-law, John B. III and Brenda R. Slicer, Hampton; daughter, Emily S. Hussell, Yorktown; grandson, Nathaniel S. Hussell, Yorktown; and a sister, Mary Margaret Slicer, Roanoke. Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, 1996 at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, Yorktown with Dr. Michael T. SLICER, Rev. John Burdette, Jr., 78, a native Virginian, born in Roanoke on September 29, 1917, died Saturday, July 13, 1996, at his home, 135 Wainwrights Bend, Yorktown, Va. 23692. After graduating from Roanoke College with a Bachelor of Arts degree and then Union Theological Seminary with Bachelor of Divinity degree, he served as field minister toward developing and establishing Parkview Presbyterian Church of Newport News. He organized Copeland Park Presbyterian Church and was the first Presbyterian clergyman on the Peninsula to hold evangelistic tent meetings. Rev. Slicer was ordained July 30, 1944, as an evangelist by the Norfolk Presbytery, and was retired as pastor of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church in Hampton after 40 years. A former moderator of the Norfolk Presbytery, he later served as moderator of the Vanguard Presbytery, and afterwards he was elected moderator of the new PCA. He completed the Billy Graham School of Evangelism in 1974. He preached and witnessed in London, Athens, Rome, the Caribbean and Tel Aviv in the late 1960s and early 1970s. While in Israel, he met with David Ben-Gurion, then Prime Minister. He was presented with the ``Golden Legion 50th Year Certificate of Appreciation"" by Phi Kappa Phi in 1987; he also was ushered into the Honor Guard at Roanoke College in 1990. He was a current member of the James River Presbytery, Presbyterian Church in America. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Young Slicer; a son, John B. Slicer III and his wife Brenda of Hampton; a daughter, Emily Slicer Hussell of Yorktown; a grandson, Natha niel S. Hussell of Yorktown, and a sister, Mary Margaret Slicer of Roanoke. A funeral service was conducted on Wednesday, July 17, 1996, at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, Yorktown, by Dr. Michael T. Condrey. Burial followed in Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton. WHITMORE, Irene Elder, of Roanoke, formerly of Lynchburg, passe d away Friday, July 26, 1996. Born February 6, 1938, a beautiful and special woman, who was not only loved by her family and friends, but by everyone she knew, be it a stranger. She touched everyone's life in a very special way. Survivors include two sons, Daniel Thomas Whitmore and Thomas Braughtigan Whitmore, both of Roanoke; two daughters, Sherry L. Christensen, Roanoke and Kathryn W. Myers; and son-in-law, Kenneth E. WRIGHT, Belvia Lockwood Gibson, 83, of Bedford, died Saturday, July 27, 1996 in a local hospital. She was born September 24, 1912 in Pound, Va., a daughter of the late James Gibson and Cora Sowards Gibson. She was the widow of Charlie Roe Wright, a retired employee of Pittston Coal Co., a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and the Pound, Va. Chapter #67, Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles C. and Ann Pendleton Perrow Wright of Bedford; a sister, Maxie G. Mullins of Manheim, Pa.; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Harmon Wright and Charles Walker Wright, both of Bedford. Funeral services will be conducted at the graveside in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Abingdon, Va. at 11 a.m. Monday, July 29, 1996, with Eastern Star Lodge #67 officiating. Memorials may be made to Christmas in April, Inc., P. O. Box 194, Bedford, Va. 24523. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Carder-Tharp Funeral Home.
WRIGHT, Wiley Junior, 64, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, July 27, 1996. He was preceded in death by his father, Wiley C. Wright, a brother, Bobby Murray and brother-in-law, Duke Ducommun. He
is survived by his mother, Marie Murray; stepfather, Robert Murray; daughters and son-in-law, Robin Ducommun, Roanoke, Sharon and Hank Bowers, Roanoke; two si sters, Ethelene Campbell, Roanoke, Carolyn Anderson, Roanoke; brother, Richard Wright, Roanoke; grandson, Jessee Bowers, Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, July 29,1996 at 10 a.m. at Lotz Roanoke Chapel. Burial will follow in Bailey Family Cemetery, Franklin County. ZORR, Frank Parker, 70, of Sal em, passed away at the Salem Veteran's Hospital on Friday, July 26, 1996. He was a native of Buffalo, N.Y. and had retired from General Electric after thirty years of service and was also a WWII Navy Veteran. He was the beloved husband of Margaret J. Zorr. He was the great and wonderful father of Peter and Joan Zorr. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Margaret Baine Potts, of Forestville, Md. and Mike, David, Pam and Tina. Preceded in death by a brother, Albert Zorr; parents, Gladys Laggy and Albert O. Zorr. Mr. Zorr cherished his years as a Boy Scout and his involvement in the Roanoke Chapter of Antique Automobile Club of America. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday July 29, 1996 in the John M. Oakey and Son, Salem Chapel with Rev. Harmon Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial gifts be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or The Salem Rescue Squad.
