A Christiansburg student was recently recognized for outstanding verbal and mathematical abilities at the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. Hunter Dickenson, a rising eighth-grader at Christiansburg Middle School, took the SAT I: Reasoning Test in January through the center's annual talent search. Seventh-graders who scored well above the mean for high school seniors were honored at an awards ceremony at Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg.
Hunter is the son of James and Kathie Dickenson of Christiansburg.
Four students from Blacksburg High School recently attended the 1996 National Leadership Meeting of Future Homemakers of America/Home Economics Related Occupations in St. Louis, Mo. More than half of the students, including those from Blacksburg, participated in the Students Taking Action with Recognition events competition.
Judy Collins and Charity Long, both juniors, each received a gold medals in the Focus on Children event. The event required students to apply their work and family skills to plan and implement a project that had a positive impact on children. Collins' and Long's project was to provide a parent education program on the importance of play to the parents of Blacksburg High School Playschool children. Collins is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Collins. Long is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Long.
Laura Palmer, a 1996 graduate, received a silver medal in the Food Service event. Palmer prepared a meal in an authentic work environment. She was evaluated on several criteria, including use of industry standard work habits and ability to plan as a team. She is the daughter of Donna McCoy.
Sarah Johnson, a senior, will serve as the state FHA/HERO vice-president of Students Taking Action events. Johnson has served as one of five voting delegates for Virginia. She already has served as a youth evaluator for the Chapter Showcase event. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Johnson.
The students were accompanied to the conference by chapter advisers Mary Warren and Mary Fain.
Christal M. Miller, a rising senior at Blacksburg High School, has been selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference this week in Washington, D.C. Miller is among 350 outstanding National Scholars from across America who is attending the conference.
The theme of the conference is Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today. During the conference, Miller will meet key leaders and newsmakers from the three branches of government, the media and diplomatic corps.
At school, Miller is involved with Students Against Drunken Driving and Students for Service Club. She is the daughter of Lynne Miller Johnson of Blacksburg.
