NRCC to hold course on gun safety
DUBLIN - New River Community College will offer a course in handgun safety this month. The two day class will be at the NRCC campus in Dublin from 7 to 9 p.m on Aug. 12-13. The course will be taught by Pulaski County Sheriff Ralph Dobbins. Course fee is $25 per person.
The two-day class is intended for anyone who is applying for a handgun permit through the courts. Students will learn the nomenclature of revolvers and/or semiautomatic handguns, as well as understand safety issues related to handgun ownership. Students also will be taught about the legal responsibilities and liabilities of handgun ownership. Students will perform dry firing exercises demonstrating basic shooting principles.

Orientation planned
CHRISTIANSBURG - Big Brothers/Big Sisters of New River Valley will have a volunteer orientation at 7 p.m. on Aug. 21 at the Christiansburg Public Library on Sheltman Street. Interested individuals must be 18 years old, have access to a vehicle and be able to serve four hours a week for one year (or three semesters if a student). Two forms of photo identification are required and $2 donation for notary fee. For information, call 381-0662.
