Franklin County activities

Franklin County Parks & Recreation is holding registration for its fall youth programs. Flag football, soccer and tennis lessons are planned, as well as trips, karate and fitness and nutrition analysis. Adult activities include tennis lessons, volleyball and co-ed softball. Call 483-9293.

Showtimers tryouts

Showtimers will hold auditions for ``The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940,'' Aug. 10, 1-4 p.m., and Aug. 13, 7:30-10 p.m. at the Studio Theatre. Roles for five adult women and five adult men, ages 30-60s, are available. There is one black male role.

Those auditioning will be asked to read scenes from the play. Copies of the play are available at the reference desks Roanoke City Library downtown and at the Roanoke County Library Headquarters.

Performances will run Nov. 7-17. The studio is at 2067 McVitty Road S.W. near the Allstate Building. Call 342-5857.

Oktoberfest Festival

Organizers for Martinsville's annual Oktoberfest Festival are accepting applications for arts and crafts, food, entertainment and other vendors. The event will be held Oct. 5, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. All handmade crafts are eligible. Food vendors may be commercial or non-profit. Entertainment will include bands, dancers, magicians and clowns. Early registration deadline is Aug. 10; late registration is due Sept. 15. Call (540) 632-4487.

Clubhouse Kids

Clubhouse Kids Productions is holding registration this week for classes in drama, voice, movement, stage acting and TV this fall in Lynchburg and Bedford. Weekly classes will culminate in a Thanksgiving production, ``Griswald the Turkey'' a musical. Class space is limited. Call 586-0652.

Peace pilgrimage

The annual Pilgrimage to U.S. Peace Places, Appomattox to Yorktown, will take place Aug. 6-10.

About a dozen people will make a five-day, 165-mile walk from Appomattox Historical Park, site of Lee's surrender, to Surrender Field, Yorktown, where Cornwallis surrendered to Washington. This year's theme is ``Non-Violence Is a Family Value.'' The pilgrimage is sponsored by Pax Christi Virginia, Lynchburg Peace Education Center, Virginians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, Tabor Retreat Center and Quaker Lake Friends Meeting.
