AKERS, Edna Reed, 95, of Willis, passed away Friday, August 2, 1996, at Skyline Manor Nursing Home. She was born September 27, 1900, and was the widow of Guy Howard Akers of Willis. She is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, Hosea William ``Bill'' and Freeda Akers, Halifax and Willis, Shirley Ross and Helen Akers, Beltsville, Md., Bobby Lee and Louise Akers, Nanjemoy, Md., Carl Ray and Donna Akers, College Park, Md., Guy Richard and Karen Akers, Gaithersburg, Md.; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Claudine Poff, Jacksonville, Fla., Clara Ann Vaughn, Christiansburg, Lynn and Fred Hughes, Baton Rouge, La., Peggy and Donald Reed, Chester, Doretta and Dwight Shorter, Christiansburg; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Lula and Hobert Marshall, Virgie Cox, both of Indian Valley; sister-in-law, Edna Reed, Willis; 28 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Rev. Roy Turpin officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Floyd County Rescue Squad or a favorite charity.

BURGESS, Betty Lou, (Reigan), 72, of Lexington, died Friday, August 2, 1996. Arrangements by Williams Funeral Service, Lexington.

COOPER, Mary Frances, 49, of Glade Hill, died Thursday, August 1, 1996. She was preceded in death by a son, Glen Bedsaul. Surviving are her husband, Franklin Wayne Cooper; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Dave Moore, Roanoke; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Will is and Becky Bedsaul, Culpepper, and Steven Bedsaul; five grandchildren, Nick, Mark, and Holly Moore, Meagan and Jackline Bedsaul; one brother, James Bedsaul, Roanoke; 3 sisters-in-law, Ruby Lynch, Mary Ann Beckner, and Nancy Amos all of Rocky Mount; one brother-in-law, Donnie Cooper, Rocky Mount. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park. DILLON, Billy Gray, better known as Bill Dillon, 49, of Galax, died Wednesday, July 31, 1996 in the Veterans Hospital in Salem. Mr. Dillon was born in Grayson County on September 27, 1946 to William Mumford Dillon and Lena Rose Roberts Dillon. Mr. Dillon was a self-employed barber in Galax. In addition to his mother he is survived by a daughter, Ginger Dillon, of Woodlawn; brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Ruthie Dillon, of Woodlawn; a niece, Susan Blankenship and a nephew, Randy Dillon, both of Hillsville and a very special friend, Icy Marshall, Hillsville. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with the Rev. Bob Adams, Rev. Fred Jennings, Rev. Gray Burcham and Rev. Bill Norman officiating. Burial will follow in Bishop's Chapel Cemetery with military rites by Hillsville VFW Post 1115.

EVERLY, Nellie R., 94, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, July 30, 1996 at Camelot Hall Nursing Home where she had been a long time resident. Surviving are her daughter, Doris E. Givens, Roanoke; two grandsons, Mike Givens, and Tim Givens, both of Roanoke; three great-granddaughters in Palm Coast, Fla.; one great-great-grandson in Florida; one sister in Cheasapeke, Va.; and one sister in Ohio. Funeral services will be held at the graveside 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 6, 1996 in Coyner Springs Cemetery with Rev. William Monday officiating. Friends may call Sunday at Lotz Roanoke Chapel.

EWEN, John, 69, of Hardy, formerly of Ridgewood, N.J., died Thursday, August 1, 1996. Services for the family will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakey's Vinton Chapel.

FISHER, William Odock, (``Doc""), 74, of Blacksburg, died Thursday, August 1, 1996 at University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville. He was born June 13, 1922 in Montgomery County to the late Enos Radford and Mary Lou Fisher. He was a member of Fairview Community Church with many years of service as Superintendent. He was a former coal miner in Montgomery County and retired from Hercules, Inc. in June 1986, with 24 years service and also a member of the Leonard E. McCoy Post of the V.F.W. No. 5311 in Christiansburg. He is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Eula Sheppard Fisher of Blacksburg; two sisters and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Well, Baltimore, Md., and Annie Ruth and Bill Oxendine, Blacksburg; one brother and sister-in-law, Frank B. and Pauline ``Teeny"" Fisher, Blacksburg; two special nephews, Victor Sheppard, Blacksburg and James Dean Sheppard, Remington, Va.; and a special niece, Anita Kim Martin, Blacksburg. Funeral services will be held at the Fairview Community Church at 2 p.m. Monday, August 5, 1996, with the Rev. Jimmie Lee Price officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. GOODMAN, Bowie Clayton Jr., of Christiansburg, died Thursday, August 1, 1996, at Kennestone Hospital of an apparent heart attack, while visiting in Marietta, Ga. Born December 5, 1925 in Austinville, he was the son of the late Bowie Clayton Goodman Sr. and Dixie Wright Goodman of Austinville. He was the beloved husband of 47 years of Dorothy Bralley Goodman of Christiansburg; the beloved father of Beatrice Elaine Goodman of Boston, Mass., Bowie Clayton Goodman III and his wife, Connie Thompson Goodman, of Vinton, and Evelyn Christine Goodman Chang and her husband, Frederick Hyunju Chang, of Tuscaloosa, Ala. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Andrew Louden Goodman and Julie Ann Goodman of Vinton, and Ross Clayton Chang, Tuscaloosa, Ala. In addition, he is survived by his stepmother, Gracie Crockett Goodman of Austinville. He was preceded in death by one brother, Kermit Louden Goodman; and one sister, Kathryn Ellen Goodman, both of Austinville. Also su rviving are two brothers-in-law, Moyer Cundiff Bralley of Austinville and Eugene Guy Bralley of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; four sisters-in-law, Anna Roop Bralley, Austinville, Lorraine Courtney Bralley of Shawnee Mission, Kan., Peggy Bralley Johnson of Austinville, and Geneva Goodman Poston of Wytheville; five nephews, George Bralley, Guy Bralley, Mark Bralley, Darrel Bralley, and G. B. Johnson; six nieces, Patsy King, Phyllis Porter, Vickie Christly, Mada Finney, Cheryl Haney, and Jaci Seiter. Mr. Goodman was a disabled American Veteran, resulting from combat service in the Army during World War II, and received the Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts for his service to his country. After the service he was a student at Emory and Henry College and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy in 1953. He was an active and dedicated pharmacist for 43 years in the counties of Montgomery, Pulaski, and Giles. For 18 years he co-owned and operated Miller Drug Store in Christiansburg, and the past 20 years at Pulaski Drug. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Christiansburg since 1958. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday from the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Christiansburg, conducted by the Rev. Doug Kanney. Burial will be in West End Cemetery, Wytheville. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 176, Christiansburg, Va. 24073. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Saturday at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home and the family will receive friends there Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.

HUBBARD, Jason Danial Warren, 21, of Rocky Mount, died Monday, July 29, 1996. He was born in Roanoke on December 17, 1974, a son of Warren Edmond Hubbard and Betty Sigmon Hubbard of Rocky Mount. In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife, Regina Dawn Leonard Hubbard; brothers and sister-i n-law, Paul Warren and Kim Nichols Hubbard, Roanoke, Travis Warren Hubbard, Rocky Mount; maternal grandmother, Bevoline Sigmon, Bassett; paternal grandmother, Dora Hubbard, Fieldale; stepgrandfather, John Tuggle, Fieldale; mother-in-law, Doreen Lynn Stewart, Nightdale, N.C.; brothers-in-law, Michael Stewart, Nightdale, N.C., Joshua Leonard, North Carolina. KEISTER, Gary William, 51, of St. Augustine, Fla., and formerly of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, June 6, 1996, in St. Augustine, Fla., after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his father, William W. Keister; his mother, Pauline Linkous Keister. Surviving are two brothers and two sisters, all of Roanoke; three sons and one daughter, all of Roanoke; six grandchildren; and a host of nephews and nieces. He was laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery in St. Augustine, Fla.

MANNING, Curtis Wimmer, ""Dick"", 80, of Copper Hill, died Thursday night, August 1, 1996 at his home. Surviving are his wife, Mabel Wimmer Manning, Copper Hill; one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Beverly Manning, Roanoke; three grandchildren, Paula Kawamura, Michael Manning, both of Roanoke and Michelle Manning, Nashville, Tenn.; one great-grandchild Kame Kameka; two brothers, Howard Manning, Thomas, Ga. and William Manning, Roanoke; three sisters, Lillie Mae Clingenpeel, Roanoke, Betty Marie Brubaker, Richmond and Mary Jane Farmer, Kingston, Tenn. MEADOR, Mildred Bell, 61, of Goodview, passed away Friday, August 2, 1996, at her residence. She was born December 18, 1934 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Jerry Bryant Meador and Dora Daniel Meador. She was a member of the Diamond Hill United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Pauline and Don Ayers, Goodview, Helen and Ed Rynd, Florence, Ky.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John R. Meador, Goodview, Paul and Annie Mae Meador, Tony and Peggy Meador, all of Moneta; a sister-in-law and her husband, Clara and Jack Wirt, Goodview; a special nephew, Tyler Ramey, Goodview; special friends, Rachel Chattin, Joy Hannabass and Dorothy Hurt. TUCK, Oscar W., 86, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, August 1, 1996. He was retired from Tultex with over 50 years of service. Mr. Tuck was preceded in death by his wife, Edith B. Tuck. He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Carole Lee and Harmon Bower; son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Cherie Tuck; three granddaughters, Teresa Fralin, Stephanie and Christy Tuck; one great-granddaughter, Nicole Fralin; brother, Dennis Tuck; two sisters, Peggy Pedigo and Ethel Hudson. TURPIN, John Thurman, Jr., of 210 Hilltop Drive, Madison Heights, died Friday, August 2, 1996 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Virginia Marshall Turpin. Born in Roanoke, he was a son of the late John Thurman Turpin, Sr., and Minnie Saville Turpin. Mr. Turpin was retired from Delta Star with 32 years of service, a U. S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of American Legion Post 274, Moose Lodge #715 and was a member of Oxford Presbyterian Church in Lexington. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Larry D. Balser and his wife, Joan; one grandson, John C. ``Jay"" Balser, all of Lynchburg; three sistes, Nancy T. Dunlap, Glasgow, Vinda T. Bryant, Charlottesville and Mary T. Woods, Lexington; one brother, Tom Turpin, also of Lexington; and beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Turpin. A funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. from Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. James W. Burke and the Rev. Robert Leonard, with burial to follow in Broad Creek Cemetery in Natural Bridge, with military honors by American Legion Post #16. WORTH, Hilda Staton, 63, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, July 31, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday from Faith Missionary Baptist Church, Christiansburg, with burial in Sherwood Burial Park in Salem.
