CHRISTIANSBURG - Chris A. Myers has been promoted to supervisor/district line for American Electric Power's Christiansburg District.
Myers holds a degree in electrical engineering from West Virginia Institute of Technology. He joined AEP in 1986 as an electrical engineer in Bluefield, W.Va. He was promoted to electrical engineer-senior in 1992.
Blacksburg Business Showcase
BLACKSBURG - Businesses are invited to participate in the Blacksburg Business Showcase at Virginia Tech's Squires Student Center from 1-5 p.m. Aug. 31.
The showcase gives local businesses a chance to show their products and services to students at the beginning of the university's school year.
The cost is $75 for a 3-by 8-foot clothed table. Electrical hook-ups are $10 each. The deadline to register is Friday.
Setup for the event is from noon to 1 p.m. Businesses will not be allowed to sell merchandise or advertise alcoholic beverages.

Sessions planned on starting a business
BLACKSBURG - People interested in starting a small business can participate in free workshops in several localities in the New River Valley and Southwest Virginia in the next month.
The workshops will be held from 7-9 p.m. at the following locations and dates: Tuesday at Wytheville Community College Management Training Center; Tuesday, Aug. 20, in Floyd at the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library; Thursday, Aug. 22, in Blacksburg at the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center; Tuesday, Aug. 27, at the Galax Education Center; Thursday, Sept. 5, at Pulaski Community Hospital; and Monday, Sept. 9, in Marion at the Smyth Bland Regional Public Library.
The sessions, sponsored by the New River Valley and Wytheville small business development centers, will identify business skills needed for success, the importance of planning and how to estimate startup costs. Sharon Scott, who has worked with small businesses in Florida, will teach the course.

Chamber plans new fund-raiser
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Christiansburg-Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications and donations in its new "Montgomery County Ambassador" fund-raising event.
The ambassador will represent the chamber at events and receive gift certificates, a complimentary lunch and a weekend getaway.
Anyone may nominate a Christiansburg or Montgomery County business person or civic club member for a $35 processing fee by Aug. 23. The winner will be the person with the most votes, at $1 each. People can vote as many times and for as many nominees as they want, for $1 for each vote. The deadline for all ballots is Oct. 10.
Leadership skills course announced
CHRISTIANSBURG - Area chambers of commerce are sponsoring "Leadership New River Valley," a nine-week course on honing leadership skills beginning in September.
The workshop will identify personal leadership talents, unite people of diverse backgrounds and experience, challenge participants to become involved in their communities and offer an opportunity for developing contacts in the community.
The workshop begins Sept. 24 and continues during subsequent Tuesdays from 7 to 9:15 p.m. at various New River Valley locations. The cost is $99 before Sept. 14 and $125 after that date and includes materials, refreshments and a banquet.
